Dear Editor
I did not attend any of the
City Council meetings at which
the complaints about some of
our local police officers were
aired, but, I too was incensed
at the column "for instance"
wherein these complaints were
summarily dismissed as
"poppycock".
It is ridiculous to assume
that a police force, or its in
dividual members, by virtue of
their position or uniform, can
do no wrong The way to ensure
that a police force remains a
good one is through the actions
of citizens with the courage to
voice their legitimate concers
about illegal and unwarranted
actions by certain police of-
ficers These people should be
commended for their efforts
and good citizenship Those
who sneer at their efforts are
the true "againsters" Law and
order is for all. including police
officers, who must obey the
law , even as they enforce it
Thanks lo the George Mereks
and the others who did
something for all of us who
know of these* incidents should
have done
Sincerely,
(Mrs.) Virginia M Fillingim

Visits G-P District
An accreditation team from
the Texas Education Agency
made a routine check of the
Gregory-Portland School
District last week and in their
oral report lo Superintendent
W C Andrews they were
generally laudatory in their
remarks about the schools'
program
This is the first accreditation
chf ck for the G-P district since
I960.
Jack Mayberry, learn
leader, was especially high in
his praise for the number of
nonrequired elective courses
offered in both junior high
school and high school "The
entire program is well above
the minimum,” Mayberry
said
The team called attention of.
the district to the need to make
plans to abolish the temporary
classrooms that are now used
extensively throughout the
system A total of 23 units are
in use
The accreditation team
consisted of Mayberry, Aur
bery Wilkins, Louis Maheely
and Keith Harding A separate
team investigating compliance
with civil rights laws composed
of Harvey King and Maguel
l)eLc« Santos made a survey o
the district at the same time
Their report will be submitted
in writing at a later date, as
will the complete report of the
accreditation committee
