The Kerr Wildlife Manage-
ment Area has found, through
extensive research, that pas-
tures stocked with livestock and
deer on a continuous use basis
do not provide adequate quan-
tity nor variety of preferred
deer food species to properly
maintain deer reproduction and
welfare, regardless of the do-
mestic stocking rate in effect. It
has been known for a long time
that a pasture will do better and
produce more wool, mohair and
feed per acre through a good de-
ferred rotation grazing system.
This proves that even light
stocking on a continuous basis
still reduces or eliminates desir-
able and necessary plant food.
Complete Farm Pond
S. E. McCreless has recently
completed a stock water pond on
his ranch at Waring. This pond
is located in a part of his range-
land where stock water was not
readily available. McCreless
plans to crossfence this pasture
to obtain a better utilization of
his native grasses. This pond
will help gain this objective.

NINE BOERNE YOUTHS
IN CALF SCRAMBLE
Nine Boerne youths are en-
tered in the Calf Scramble Con-
test of the 13th Annual San
Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo,
Feb. 9-18th, at the Joe Free-
man Coliseum, according to
Leon Kahanek, Chairman of the
Calf Scramble Committee.
Area entries and date of ap-
pearance include: Ronald Seh-
wope, Glenn Cravey, and Bobby
Reed, who are entered in the 8
P. M. performance, Friday, Feb.
9, 1962.
Robert Cravey, Jr., Randy
Wilson, and Eugene Lang, who
are entered in the 2 P. M. per-
formance, Sunday, Feb. 11, 1962.
Larry Whitworth, John Phil-
lip, and John Allen, who are en-
tered in the 8 P. M. perform-
ance, Monday, Feb. 12, 1962.
These youth are among 280
FFA and 4-H members who will
take part in the Calf Scramble
sponsored by the Handy-Andy
Supermarkets of San Antonio,
Austin, and Corpus Christi.
During each of fourteen per-
formances of the World Cham-
pionship Rodeo starring Rex
Allen; co-star songstress Anita
Bryant; and featuring National
Archery Champion Ann Marston
20 boys, either FFA or 4-H
members, will scramble to catch
the ten calves. The youths who
win at each of the performances
of the Feb. 9-18th Rodeo, will be
awarded livestock purchase cer-
tificates as prizes by Handy-
Andy, which range from the top
award of $50 down to eighth
through tenth prizes of $15.
These certificates must be
used by the winners as their 4-H
or FFA project. Title to the live
stock doesn’t pass to the boy,
however, until he has demonstra
ted his interest in caring for it
and his ability to follow compe-
tent instructions in raising the
livestock.
The Calf Ecramble is directed
by chairman Leon Kahanek of
Hallettsville. A1 Jonietz is sup-
erintendent of the event, assist-
ed by Blake McCreless, Glen
Hummel, Jr., and a committee
of thirty Texas businessmen and
ranchers.
Tickets for the 13th Annual
San Antonio Stock Show and
Rodeo are now on sale and can
be ordered by mail by writing:
Harry Freeman, Ticket Chair-
man, 1015 Tower Life Bldg.,
San Antonio. Prices are $3.60,
$3 and $2. In San Antonio, tick-
ets are on sale at the Gunter
Hotel Lobby and Kallison’s Coun
try Store ticket offices.
