Texas, died Sunday, February

ed by her family.
Bom in Ralls, Texas, on
May 20, 1930, Billie was the
daughter of Tom Ed Benton and

She graduated from Ralls High
School in 1947 and attended

bock for two years. On Feb-
ruary 18, 1949, Billie married

raised their family, Kelly Kent
bom in 1950 and Brent Lane
bom in 1955. Billie was a
homemaker.
In 1968, having reared her
sons through Kent’s gradua-
tion from high school, Billie
enrolled in Texas Tech again
and received her Bachelor of
Education degree in 1970. B.L.

Billie began teaching in the
Ralls Independent School Dis-
trict in 1970, and taught from
the time she was 40 years old

of 82.
Because of her love of
kids and teaching, she taught
many generations of families in
the Ralls area during her long
teaching career.
An avid Ralls Jackrabbit
fan, she loved Jackrabbit Foot-
ball, Basketball, Baseball and
Track, for both boys and girls,
middle school and high school.
Billie loved Ralls, period! She
loved the Ralls Museum and
the History of Ralls. She was
a great ambassador for the City
of Ralls. Billie will be greatly
missed by numerous friends and
scores of students whom she
had taught over the years.
She was a longtime member
of the Emma Church or Christ,
and a member of the Ralls Jay-
cettes.

by her husband, B.L. Anderson,
Jr. in 2005; son, Brent Lane An-
derson in 1989; and her parents.

children, Dawn Valerie Gutier-
rez (Javier), Leah Martinez, and

Little Known Black History Fact: The First Black Girl
Scouts of America
The Girl Scouts of America began as an all-white organiza-
tion in Savannah, Ga., in 1912. Five years later, in 1917, the
troop introduced its first African American girl scouts, possibly
in the New York area. This positive change led to the integra-
tion of more scout troops in 1950, 14 years before the Civil
Rights Movement. It forged the creation of a Native American
troop in 1921, followed by a Mexican American girl troop. In
the late 1930’s, the first southern region African American Di-
xie troop was formed. In the archives of the Girls Scouts of
America, there is a photo of both black and white girl scouts at
Camp Indian Run in Philadelphia, 1941.
With an eye for diversity, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. de-
scribed the Girl Scouts as “a force for desegregation” in 1956.
Inl969, Dr. Dorothy B. Ferebee served as the first black
vice president of Girl Scouts USA. African American Girl Scout
troops gained national recognition and nurtured black girls’ in-
terest in aviation, global travel, new technology and leadership.
