State Rainey
Is Candidate
The pre-campaign work in be-
half of H. P. Rainey for governor
reached into the Panhandle of
Texas this week.
Mrs. Margaret Redding and Mrs.
Marion Storm of Austin are trav-
eling over the Plains for Rainey
and were in Panhandle Monday,
visiting officials at the court
house, including Mrs. Willie
O’Neal, member of the State Dem-
ocratic Executive Committee from
the 31st senatorial district.
Although Rainey has not an-
nounced for office, the wonien
said that he definitely is a candi-
date for governor. They also said
that Rainey planned to visit in the
Panhandle region this week.
Mrs. Redding and ‘Mrs. Storm
are graduates of the University of
Texas. Mrs. Reddings said that
several generations;of her family
had attended the University.
They came to The Herald office
and left a seven page sketch of
Rainey. As soon as The Herald
editor met the women, he inform-
ed them of his connection with the
University as a member of the
Board of Regents.
This was done to warn the wom-
en so that they could reserve any
comments should they desire re-
garding University affairs.
Mrs. Redding admitted that it
twas out of the picture for Rainey
vto return to the presidency of the
University, but she was outspoken
in her condemnation of Dudley
K. Woodward of Dallas, chairman
of the Board of Regents, for a
statement he made in January,
1945, in Austin from a letter from
a federal judge from Pennsyl-
vania. This judge, who resigned
later, was a member of the board
of trustees of Bu.cknell Univer-
sity, of which institution Rainey
was once president.
Lack of diligence in verifying
information before issuing t h e
statement was charged against
Woodward by Mrs. Redding.
After visiting in Panhandle, Mrs.
Redding and Mrs. Storm planned
to go to Borger and other cities
type of camping experience
summer.

ism of the University of Missouri.
in the Panhandle.

ing up in the. Panhandle this early
in the season,” said a court house
official.

The gentleman above is wearing that broad grin for lots of good
reasons. At 38, and after twenty years in service he is retiring,to a
civilian life made more secure by a government payment of $89.70
monthly for the balance of his life.
He also know* that a retirement plan offering the same income
would have cost him $84.00 per montfi over a period of 20 years in
civilian life. .
So now, his financial security insured by the government, he can
afford to grin. Wouldn't you?
