Right now is the height of the
season for pruning, watering and
fertilizing shrubs and shade trees.
The lawn needs care too.
Shrubs that bloom in late
summer such as crape myrtle, vi-
Tex, salt cedar, althea, elaeagnus,
roses, and abela should be prun-
ed in February and March or as
soon as danger of hard freeze is
over. These bloom on new growth
and usually new growth starts
as soon as pruning is done.
Of course there are cases where
pruning should be done, regard-
less of the time of year. Dead or
badly diseased limbs should be
cut off and burned as soop as
they are discovered. To promote
well shaped growth, these dam-
aged branches should be cut off.
Limbs that chafe or rub across
each other should be removed.
In pruning try to keep the na-
tural shape of the tree or shrub
as it is much more attractive this
way. If you did not prune your
Pfitzer Juniper before Christmas,
now is a good time to do so. Do
keep the the natural shape when
cutting long limbs that extend
over walks or drives. Go in next
to the trunk and cut the whole
limb out rather than shearing in
the tpsi of the limbs which ruins
the shape of Junipers.
