Preservation Dallas Co-Sponsors Dallas History Conference
Preservation Dallas is one of thirteen organizations sponsoring the Third Annual Legacies Dallas
History Conference on Saturday, October 6. The theme of this year's conference is "Women Who
Made a Difference."
The one-day conference will be held at the Hockaday School in North Dallas from 8:30 a.m. to
4 p.m. The registration fee of $25 includes lunch and morning refreshments. All those on the
Preservation Dallas mailing list should have received registration information in the mail, but if
not, please contact conference coordinator Michael V. Hazel at 214-421-5141, ext. 105.
The luncheon speaker is a true history maker in Dallas, Lillian Moore Bradshaw, Director of the Dallas Public
Library from 1962 to 1984.
Among the historians presenting papers are Pat Coggan, "Miss Ela Hockaday"; James Pratt,
"Utopia for Women: Dreaming the Ideal; Living the Reality," about the women of the La Reunion
Colony; Jackie McElhaney, "The Dallas Infants Welfare and Milk Association"; and Marsha Prior
and Terry Schulte, "Battling Poverty and Prejudice: Dallas African American Women and Social
Reform in the Progressive Era." Other speakers include Elizabeth Enstam, "A Question To Be
'Settled Right': Dallas and Votes for Women"; Jerrie Marcus Smith, "Carrie Marcus Neiman:
Nerves of Steel, Heart of Butter"; and Yvonne Frear, "Paralyzed by the Pain of the Past: Juanita
Craft and the Fight to End Segregation in Dallas, Texas.3

Specialist Seminar
The next Preservation Dallas Historic
House Specialist Seminar will be held
November 8 and 9,8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at
the Wilson Carriage House. The cost is
$185 for a two-day seminar open exclu-
sively to realtors. The seminar includes:
lectures from local experts on architectural
history, City of Dallas ordinances and their
impact on homeowners, how to research
the history of a building, an overview of
historic interiors, an extensive bus tour of
Dallas' historic neighborhoods, lunch and
a tour of the Wilson House, the 1899
Queen Anne Victorian house which is the
home of Preservation Dallas.
The presentations are designed to give
realtors the vocabulary and research tools
necessary to successfully market houses in
Dallas' older and historic neighborhoods.

25 participants.Third Annual Vickery Place Neighborhood
Association Home Tour
Five houses, of the 1200 houses in Vickery Place, will be
featured on this year's tour, Saturday, October 13 from
10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The tour will benefit Vickery Place
Neighborhood Association and Preservation Dallas.
Vickery Place is a dynamic inner-city neighborhood sharing
in the urban Renaissance of Dallas. It is largely residential
with close proximity to downtown, and the retail/enter-
tainment of Knox/Henderson and Greenville Avenue.
Development of Vickery Place began in 1911. Architectural
styles include Craftsman bungalow, vernacular Prairie
School, Colonial Revival, Tudor and Spanish Eclectic.
Tickets can be purchased for $10 at the featured houses
no earlier than 10 a.m., October 13: 5401 Miller, 5354
Miller, 5435 Vickery, 5627 Vickery and 5215 Goodwin.
