"Founded 1873 By the Freedmen's Aid and Southern Education Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church." "Rev. J. C. Hartzell, D. D., Rev. J. W. Hamilton, D. D., Corresponding Secretarys. Cincinnati, O." There is a handwritten signature on the front cover in black ink as well as other handwritten notations. The top, left-hand corner is missing from page 53 (and the top right corner of page 54) which has resulted in some missing text.
