until within the past tew days an oppor

dogrce that has existed among the classes
of colored people since the tremendous
shocks of Tuesday night Tbcy fled from
their bouses and as they rau hither and
thither through blind clouds of dust they
tilled tbo air with dismal groans of de-
spair and lamentations of terrified dls
tress As usual with them In funeral de
votlons the namo ot Jesua was most
frequently used as If supplicating

out In very helplessness and depths of
despair such sentences as Do my Mas-
ter Jesus have mercy on mei Ohl
sweet Jesus savo me save mo Let
mo live through this ulght dear God my
Savior Hold mo up once more Thou
blessed Christ ray Master Other tear-
ful supplications which Intensified tho
horror ot the situation went far
toward demoralizing tho whites who
wero also pushing blindly hlthor and
thither As Is usual tho faces of white
men and women in tlrao of danger wero n
sight of sudden Joy in gloom to many a
poor wondering colored boy or girl who
endeavored to stop their white friends as
they ran by In contnalpn to suppli-
cate that they would return
with fjthom until judgment was
done In many instances trembling
girls knelt down on tholr knees and
seized with frantic energy folds ot somo
whito ladys dress and falling to express
their terror in words with scarcely moving
lips betokened that thoy only wanted
moral support of their friends In tho hour
