at Denver wlll greatly aid in a settlement
of the question in a manner satisfactory
to the interests of this state
The prickley pear has been found ot
immense benefit in South Texas this
year All reports from that part of the
state say cattle have come through with
scarcely a loss Of course there were
some stockmen with so little
prndence as to attempt to-
go through the winter without
making any provision for young and weak
cattle even with the means they had to
easily do so AH kinds ot stock eat the
pear cattle horses sheep and hogs and
with such advantages the southern coun-
try is to be envied by stockmen of every
other part of the country
A gentleman returning from a trip to
Southern Texas says The cold snap it
Is true set the cattle back about two
weeks pinched them a little but I heard
of no losses and the recent rains and
sunehlne give promise of an early and
good crop of spring grass And then the
new process of which you know of
feeding sliced cactus and cotton seed Is
doing much to sustain and fatten cattle
I should say there were about 7000 feed-
ing on this nntrltlous diet in Sonthwest
Texas The cactus privileges are becom-
ing so valuable that fences are being built
to guard and foster he growth
Various topics in connection with ro
trlgerators pickeries canneries etc
are dwelt upon by Fort Worth stockmen
theso days and to judge by the tenor of
conversatlon8lt Is likely a strong attempt
will be made this spring to put such an
enterprise in operation In this city A
stockman said yesterday If you want
to All North Texas with farmers you
must provide them with a good market
upon which they can readily dispose of
their products With the operation of a
packery in Fort Worth will come a de-
mand all over the state for such articles of
fodder as will be required for the susten-
ance ot cattle awaiting slaughter or
upon the market And besides
S a great many feeding cattle will be re
qulred which will not be shipped hare
from the north the feeding to keep the
packery working will have to ba all done
in Texas The maturing of all Texas
bred cattle right here In the state and
the raising of feed for such maturing will
be one of the feremost results of the es
tablishment of the packery This enter
prise deserves the support of all classes
of people not oniy lu this city but in
every part ot the state where theso con
comitant Industries are carried on

LIGHT5ISG KODS
Colonel A C Paul the Franklin ot Lamar
Connty Dlsoonxwa
Paris Tkx Feb 91333
To the Editor ot the Gazette
Ever since Dr Franklin erected the
first lightning rod there has been a
diversity ot opinions as to their utility
Few persons understand the true princi-
ple of electricity hence some persons
believe the most eb3nrd theories of it
while others reject well established
layts In orderjto understand this sub-
ject an explanation is necessary as to
how atmospheric electricity is generated
and what laws govern Its action The
heat which rises from the earth to the
upper atmosphere is converted Into elec-
tricity by vapor of water and hydrogen
gas It Is then called a fluid but more
properly speakinga liquid and being
subject to gravitationit falls to the earth
When the atmosphere becomes charged
with It electric currents are produced
which decompose the atmosphere
Nitrogen moves with the current while
oxygen moves sgslnst the current and
crushes electricity back into heat caus-
ing an explosion the light be-
ing produced by a fine division ot
JJw > electric current but the
eat is electricity converted into gas
When it is raining the quantity of electri-
city will depend on the quantity of vapor
hydrogen gas and beat II the wind Is
blowing while the electricity Is falling to
the earth the highest objects will become
iti K ifc
THE GAZETTE POET WOBTH TEXAS SATURDAY EBBRUABY SI
charged with electricity first but it there
is no wind the height will make but little
difference The atmosphere is a noncon-
ductor of electricity and when It is over-
charged it gives up a portion of it to any
conductor with which it comes in contact
If a conductor can discharge the electri-
city as fast as it receives it there will be
no explosion but it a conductor receives
electricity faster than it can discharge it
the electricity will fly off and decompose
the atmosphere the nitrogen will move
sway from the conductor the oxygen will
move toward it and crush the electricity
into heat causing an explosion Objects
are often blackened with nitrogen depos-
ited by electricity The area protected by
a lightning rod is very limited even when
properly constructed but as usually
erected they are almost worthless All
electrical conductors must have a good
gronnd connection The man who al-
lows a lightning rod placed upon his
house without a ground connection is a
fool and tho man who puts it up is a
fraud Even manufacturers of light-
ning rods admit that rods do not attract
electricity but simply conduct it when
charged In a book published by a man-
ufactory of lightning rods in Philadelphia
for the guidance of their agents they
use these words Lightning rods no
more attract electricity than water pipes
attract water
In Connecticut a few years since was
a building 100 feet long with a lightning
rod all around the top ot the wall con-
nected with which were six rods running
Into the ground one at each of the four
corners and one In the center of the
building on each side with six points
above the wail The end of one of these
rods was in a pool of water This build-
ing was struck by lightning and burned
down The editor of the Scientific Amer
ican in his comments held that the
Ave rods which were stuck in the
ground afforded but little if any
protection and the one with Its end In
the pool of water had not the capacity to
carry off the charge There is no ques-
tion but what lightning rods afford some
protection when properly erectedbut not
to tho extent claimed by many persons
A rod stnek In the gronnd where the
ground becomes dry Is worthless Per-
sons In the country who have lightning
rods put up should always have them run
to the bottom of their well or cistern or
to some permanent supply of water or
soldered to large metalic plates burled In
the earth In cities that have gas or wa-
ter mains the lightning rods shonld al-
ways be carried lrom the building to the
main and connected with it by soldering
II the building has a metal roof the rods
should also be connected with the roof or
dawn spout by soldering Down-
spouts are often knocked off by lightning
for want ot ground connection Oil
tanks and stand pipes for waterworks
shonld have a good gronnd connection
for they rest on stone or brick and ce-
ment which are poor conductors ot elec-
tricity The danger of lightning strokes
is increased where heat and hydro-
gen gas are rising The
evaporation of the carburetted
hydrogen of oil converts heat into elec-
tricity and also where there is combus-
tion going on which liberates heat and
hydrogen gas or where there Is decompo-
sition of vegetable matter in ell such
cases electricity will be generated Then
a very little addition of electricity from
tne surrounding atmosphere will cause a
stroke of lightning Hence oil tanks and
flues where Are is burning barns and
stables arc all in greater danger than
other buildings
The copper point of a lightning rod
should not have a greater conducting ca-
pacity than the rod lf it has the first
heavy charge of electricity It receives it
will be melted off Everything becomes
charged by electricity falling from the
atmosphere on it or by tho wind bringing
electricity In contact with tbe object or
by one object being brought in contact
with another already charged and by the
conversion of heat Into electricity by hy-
drogen gas The use of conductors is to
carry the electricity to the ground to pre-
vent an accumulation sufficient to decom-
pose the atmosphere
Currents ot electricity never pass from
the earth to the clouds bnt always from
the clouds to the earth The cold cur-
rents of elecrlclty are invisible and form
before they exploue The explosion be-
gins in that part of the current which de-
composes the atmosphere first he cur-
rent may form at any angle bnt the gen-
eral direction ot all electric currents Is
towards the earth Lightning flashes go
In every direction because the explosion
may begin in any part ot the current
