To the Editor of the Gaiette
Some days ego one of our townsmen
while In Fort Worth met Major Walker
engineer of tbe St Louis Arkansas sub
Texas Rtilroad and In conversation
Maj > r Walker snggested to him that now
would be a favorable time to work for a
branch road from Frost or Mertinsc on
their Corstcana and HUlsboro JUad
through Milford end Filas Valley and ot-
to Fort Worth connecting there with
their system again That seems to u
would be a paying road both to For1
Worth and to tbe company The line
would run through a rich country one too
dotted with artesian wells Mtlford is
the only town as far as wo know
that has undertaken aa artesian well on
her own hook and there are quite a num-
ber along the line between here and the

Washington March 21 rnomaa K
Nasb general superintendent ot tbe rail-
way mall service has returned to this
city from Chicago where he personally
represented the Postoffle Department
during the recent threatened interruption
of mall transportation growing out of the
strike of locomotive engineers Mr Nasi
said to an Asociited Preis re-
porter today that the mails are now
oelng carried on all roads withopt any
delay or interruption and that no further
trubie In this respect is anticipated lie
believed all ensineers were willing and
anxious to haul msil cars whether tbe
strike was on or off and that railway
ffliclals were equally willing to let them
do to Mr Nasn stated In answer to an
tcquiry that an nnfeverlsh fee
log still prevailed among
those best informed as to
tbe situation and grave fears are enter-
tained that the strike cannot be kept
within its present limits but may yet ex-
tend to other roads and systems and so
pass beyond conservative control Mr
Nash did not wish to be understood at
uivlng i xpression to views cf alarmists
but be regarded the situation as critical
NO FEAR OF A STRIKE
New York March 21 President
Adams ot the Union Pacitlc says
oe has no reason to fear a strike on
nis road because their are no differences
between the company and its employes
He says tbe depression iu railroad stocks
is undoubtedly due to the fact that rail-
road building has been too far ahead ot
the needs of the country

little dene in the courts to day In the
District court the suit of Vina Johnson

It seems Irom the evidence that Ltllord
though a married man had gone in
partnership with Miss Vina Johnson to

house thereon but to prevent a row
In his own household he had consented
to furnish halt the money for the house

in half the house and jot
This Vina Johnson denies In toto and
says she bought and paid for the
property with her own money

his investigation that on March 1718S7

with the ttate thatday to a cent but the
Auditor does not know how his shortage

from time to time and upto a year ago

the missing Treasurers assets
are said to be 75000 of due bills from
friends for money loaned most of which
Is good six hundred barrels ot old

is estimated at 850 000 and 25 000 In
tbe bank at Frankfort The latter has
been attached and tbe due bills are
locked up the vault in tbe

was discovered among Tates ptlvate

much and Auditor Hewitt now says tbe
amount will fall considerably under the
estimate ot 8200000 The unbusiness

further question is the responsibility
ot the bondsmen It is beld

then hla bondsmen for all years prior t >

dissent from this theory

To the EJllor of the uazelte
I have oeen a reader of your valuable
paper for the past few years and seeing
so much said In regard to what could be
done in Texas the best state In tbe Union
for a man of small means to make him-
self Independent I thought I would give
my experience on a farm if 160 acres of
land I sold from he form from S ° ptem
bor 11836 to September 18S7 8543 50
worth of butter ana eggs and cnickens I
raised 1220 busSels of wheat worth
S793 I raised 850 busbcls ot corn worth
175 I raised 1C00 bushels of oats worth
3350 I raised three tons cf miliot worth
830 I sold my surplus stcck for 10 I
Ud work cntside of my crop to the
amount ol 108 sum total ot my earning
for tbe year 82 03950
Now I will give my expense account
for the year My hired help that I hiied
feed for teams thrashing out my crops
snd for feed that I fed my milk cow
amounts to 8840 SO which leaves a net
profit cf 1199 20 lor my services and lor
wear and tear of teams and farming im-
plements There is no portion of the
United States that I have ever seen
wnere any one can do any better than iu
his country I have a flee crop of wheat
this year again and all of the wheat
that I have seen that was put in
tarly is looking well The farmers are
greatly behind with their spring work
owing to so much rain If the farmers in
T xas would do as tbey do at the north
turn their attention more to raising diver-
sified crops and poultry and butter we
would not have such hard times I know
farmers in this county who never raise
anything but a wheat crop to sell to bring
them a collar and wherever you see one
of those kind you will always And them
complaining about the weather It either
rales too much for them or it is too
dry and the consequence is that they are
always behind What a man bas got to
do on a farm is to run It on a strictly
business principle to succeed just like be
as at anything else notice his farm ana
see what crop will grow best on certain
portolDS ct the farm and not plant tbe
