OPA Ends . . • What Now?
Sunday night, through the Presidents veto of the bill passed by the
Congress, OPA passed out of existence. The country, its industries
and its citizens face a crucial test.
The retail merchants of the United States, through the National
Retail Merchants Assn, and the merchants of Texas, through the
Texas Retail Merchants Assn., have favored a continuation of OPA
with modifications designed to correct admitted abuses and emis-
sions. Many persons, however, have felt that with the $nd of the
war, regimentation and regulations should cease and the natural
laws of supply and demand, honest dealing and self-restraint should^
have a chance to function. That opportunity we have now; let us
use it wisely, honestly and with tolerant patience.
Whether or not OPA is revived or an alternate plan is substituted, we, the following merchants, will
continue to base our prices on a fair standard, in order to do our part in* maintaining reasonable
price levels• We have seen the results of inflation in other countries throughout the world and its
ruinous results. None wants to see it happen here, but we believe the common sense of the American
People will see us through. We, therefore, pledge ourselves, in line with President Truman’s re-
quest, to continue to offer you only the best branded merchandise at the lowest possible margin of
profit . ♦ . today and in the future, as in the past.
