Oskaloosaj Ii Feb 2L Dr Talmage
preached here today to an enormous au
aience He expects to be absent from home
about ten days during which pertod ho
speaks in as many cities The subject of
his sermon was Heavenly Congratula-
tions His evident intention was to mako
worlds that seem a great way off from each
other appear very near His text was taken
from Luke cv 7 likewise Joy shall be in
heaven over one sinner that repentetb
more than over ninety and nine Just persons
who need no repentance
A lost sheep Xothing can be more
thoroughly lost Hook through the win-
dow of a shepherds house at night Tho
candles are lighted The shepherd has
just plaqed his staff against tho mantel Ho
has taken off his coat shaken out of it the
dust and hung it up I see by tha candle-
light that there are neighbors who havo
come in Tho shepherd fagged out with
thd lontr tramp sits down on a bench and
the wife and children and the neighbors
say to him Come now tell us how you
found tho poor thing Weil ho sajs
thisjnorning I went out to tho yard to
look at tho flock No sooner had I looked
over the fence than I saw something
wrong The fact was they did not count
right Ninetyfive ninctysixt ninety
seven ninetyeight ninetynine only
ninetynine McDonald you know we
had a hundred And I wondered which
one was gone and I began again and
I counted ninetylive ninetysix ninety
seven ninetyeight ninetynine Well I
whistled up tho dogs and I started on the
fields and across the bridges and I tracked
the moors and I leaped the gullies but no
bleating of the poor thing did I hear I said
to myself Tho lamb must have fallen into
a ditch or a pack of wolves from the
mountains must havo torn it to pieces and
sneked its lifo outl But I could not
givo it up You see it was a pet lamb
It was that one with the black
spot on the right shoulder that usca to
como and lickvmy hand as I crossed thd
field and somehow I could not give it up
So I went on and on andson until after
awhile I heard the dogs bark and I said
Whats that Then I hastened to the top
of the hill and I looked down and there I
saw tho poor lamb It had fallen into tho
ditch and as I came where it was
and bent over tho ditch and stooped
down to lift tho poor thing out I wish
you could have seen tho loving and im-
ploring and tender way it looked at me I
lifted it out and it was all covered with tho
slush and the mud It was an awful thing
to do but I lifted it out and it was sd lamp
and so weak it could not walk alone so I
threw it over my shoulders and I started
homeward and the condition of
that lamb you mav judge of from
the coat which I have just hung up
But I tramped on and on until it is safe in
tho yard poor thing Thank God thank
God Then the shepherds wife spread
ths table and brought out the best fare that
tho cabin could afford and they sat up very
lato that night and they talked and they
laughed and they sang and they ate and
they drank and they danced and told Qver
and over again the story of the lost sheep
that was found
With such tenderness and rusticity of il-
lustration does Christ represent the souls
going off and the souls coming back when
he says Likewise there is joy in heaven
among the angels of God over one sinner
that repentetb more than over ninety
and nine just persons that ecd
no repentance To repent is to
feel that jou are bad and to be
sorry about it and to turn over a new leaf
and to pray for forgiveness and help
Just as soon as a man does that they hear
rishtaway of it in heaven There are no
gossips in glory going around to chatter
and laugh when a man falls but there are
many souls in glory who are glad to run-
about and tell it when a man is saved The
news goes very quick from gate to gate
and from north wall to south wall and
from east wall to west wall and in three
minutes every citizen of heaven has heard
of it for there is Joy in heaven the
among
angols of God over one sinner that repent
ctnl lean very easily understand how
there should bo joy in heaven over a Pente-
cost with 3000 souls saved in one dav no
mj stery about that I can understand how
there should be joy in heaven over the
Parish of Schotts when 400 souls wero
Baved under ono sermon of Mr Livineston
I can understand how there should bo joy
in heavon over the great awakening in thes
tiino of Harland Pae when in one year
473000 souls were brought to God irt tho
United StatesI can understand very easily
how there should bo joy in heaven over
600000 souls converted in 1857 in this coun-
try but mark jou my text announces
thero is joy in heaven among tho angels of
Godover one just ono sinner that repent
etb Some cathedrals havo ono tower somo
cathedrals havo two three four towers
Did you ever hear them all ring at once I
am told that the bell in thb cathedral of St
Paul rings only on raro occasions for
instance at ths death or birth of a king
Havo you seen a cathedral with four tow-
ers and have yOu heard them all strike
into one great chime of gladness Hero is
a man who is moral Ho is an example to
a great many professors of religion in some
things ho never did a mead thing in his
life he pays all hU debts and is a good
citizen and a good neighbor but he says ho
is not a Christian Some day tho Holy
Spirit comes into his heart and ho sees that
he cannot depend upon his morality for
salvation Hcsajs O Lord God I havo
been depending upon my good worksvI
find I am a sinner and I want thy salvation
Lord for Jesus sake have mercy on me
And God pardons him and immediately ono
of the towers Of heaven strikes a silvery
chime for there are four towers to tho
heavenly temple Hero is A man who is
bad he knows ho is bad and everybody
else knows he is bad but lie is not an out-
cast far from being an outcast Ho moves
inTesifectablo circles
But one day by the power of tho Holy
Ghost ho rouses up to see his sinfulness
and he says O Lord have mercy I am-
a wanderer and withbut thee I perish
Have mercy God hears him and imme-
diately two of tho towers of heaven striko
a silvery chime But hero iS an outcast
He was picked up last night out of the gut-
ter and carried to the pollco station Ho
has been in the penitentiary three times
He is covered and soaked with loithesome
ness and abomination Arousing from his
debauch ho cnes out O God havo mercy
on me Thou who didst pardon tho peni
te t thiof hear moeryformeroy And the
Lordlistens and pardons and no sooner is
thepoor wretch imrdoned than three of the
great towers of heaven strike up a silvery
chime But here is a waif of the street
Sho pisses under the gaslight and your
soul sfcudders with a great horror TXo pity
fofnch No commiseration for her As
she passes down tho street she hears a
song lb a midnight mission and as she lis-
tens t6 that sotig she heara
All may come whoever will
This man receives poor sinners stliL
Sno puts into that harbor sho kneels by
tho rough bench near the door sho says
O Lord Thou who didst navo mercy On
Maty Magdalen take my blistered feet off
go in peace Now all the four towers of
Tieaven strike a silvery chime and they
Who pass through tho celestial streets say
Whats that why the worst sinner must
i hava baa saved Hear all the four tavrars

ring and ring and ring And ther6 is

ono sinner that ropenteth
My subject itnpiCsscs you I think with
tho thought that it is possible for us to
augment the happiness of heaven People
think that souls before the throne are as
happy as they can be I deny it Look at
that mother before the throne of God
When she died she left her son in this
world a vagabond That son repented Of
his iniquities and camo to God The report
of that salvation has reached heaven Do
you tdll me that mother before tho throne
of Gpd has not her joy richly augmented
There is many a man in this houso today
who could go out with a torch and kindle a-
new bonfire of victory on tho hills of
heaven Hyou would this day repent and
come to God thn news of jour salvation
would reach heaven and then barkl to the
shout of the ransomed
Your little child went away from you into
tha good land While sho wis here you
brought her all kinds of beautiful presents
Some times you came home at nightfall
with your pockets full of gif t3 for her and
no sooner did you put your nightkey into
the lateh tnan she boean at you saying
Father what havo yoU brousht mal
She is now before1 the throne of GoX Can
you bring her 3 giftt6day You may Com-
ing to Christ and repenting of sin the
tidings will go Up to the throne of God and
j our child will hear of it O what a gift
for her soul today 1 Sho will skip with
new gladness on the everlasting hills when
she hoars of it
I was at Sharpsburg during tha war ono
day I saw a sergent dash pa3ton a lathered
horse the blood dripping from the spurs I
said That sergeant must ba going on a-
very important message he must be carry-
ing a very important dispatch or he
wouldnt rido lika that Here are two
angels of God flitting through the house
flitting toward the throne on quick dis-
patch What is the news Carrying up
the story of souls repentant and forgiven
carrying thfe news to the thrdne of God
carrying the news to your kindred who are
forever saved O there is joy in heaven
among the angels of God over ono sinner
that repententb And suppose this whole
audienco should turn to the Lord Heaven
would be filled with doxologies O heaven
beat with all thy hammers that the rock
may break OI hfeaven strike with all tby
gleaming swords that our souls may be
free I was reading of a king who after
gaining a groat victory ald to his army
No no shouting let everything bo in
quiet no shouting
But if this hour your soul should como to
God nothing could stop the shouting of tho
armies of God before the throne for there
is joy in heaven among the angels of God
over one dinner that rcpenteth In some
families they kesp a vacant chair and a
vacant plato for the departed but if in
some of your households jod kept a vacant
chair and a vacant plate for those who
havo gono away from you into the next
world tho vacant chairs and tho vacant
plates would outnumber those which aro
occupied I once said to you there are no
vacant chairs in heaven but I recall that
Hight besido your loved ono in that good
land thero is a vatant chair not made va-
cant by d > ath for death never enters there
it is a vacant chair1 for you Wlllyoutakeit
My subject also impresses me with tho
idea that heaven and earth are in closo
sympathy People talk oi heaven as thdugh
it were a great way off They say it is
hundreds Of thousands of miles before you
reach the first star and then you go hun-
dreds of thousands of mUe3 before you got
to the second star and then it Is millions of
miles beforo you leach heaven They say
heaven is the center of tho universe and
wo aro on the rim ofstho universe That is
not the idea Of my text I think the heart
of heaven beats very closo to our world
Wo measure distances bj tho tima taken
to tiaverse those distances It used to bo-
a long distance to San Francisco Many
weeks and months were passed before jou
could reach that city Now it is six or
Seven days It used to be six weeks beforo
yoU could voyage from hero to Liverpool
Now you can go that distance in six or
seven days
And soImeasurethe distance between
earth and h6aven and I find it is only a
flash It is one instant here another in-
stant there It is very near today Do
you not feel the breath of heaven on your
face Christ Savs in one place it is not
twentyfoUr hours distance when he savs
to the penitent thief Tnis day this day
shalt thou be with md in Paradise It is
not aday it is not an houn it isnota min-
ute it is not a second O how near heavon
is to earth D By oceanic cablo you send a
message As it is expensive to send a mes-
sage you compress a great deal of meaning
in a few words Sometimes in two words
you can put vast meaning And it seems to-
me that the angels of God who carry news
from earth to heaven need to take up this
hour in regard to your souL only two words
in order to kindle with gladness all the re-
deemed beforo the throne only two words
Father saved mother saved son
saved daughter saved And there is
joy in heaven among the angels of God
over ond sinner that repentetb
My subject also impresses mo with tho
fact that tho salvation of the soul is of vast
importance If you should make 1200000
this year do you suppose that news would
bo carried to heaven It would not bo of
enough importance or significance to be
carried heavenward If at the noxt quaa
rennial election you are made president of
the United States do you suppose that
nows would be carried to heaven Do you
suppose that tho nows of a revolution in
France or SDain would be carried to
heaven Theso things aro not of enough
importance but thero is one item that is
sura to ba carried It is the salvation Of
your soul it is your repentance before
God The flying hoofs of Gods couriers
clash through tho gates and the nows goes
from gate to mansion and from mansion to
temple and from temple to throne and
4there is joy in heaven among tho angels
of God over ono sinner forgiven It must
be of vast importance tobe of any moment
in heaven your salvation in that land where
gladnesses aro the overyday occurrence in
that land whero the common stones of the
field are jasper and omorald nndchryso
prasiis and carbuncle and sardonyx And
yet tho news of yoir salvation makes joy
beforo tho throne of God
You remember years ago a stage driver
in the White Mountains became very reck-
less H6 had a large number of passengers
on the stage and the stage was drawn by
six horses wild and ungo > ernabls and he
drove near the precipice and he drove off
the stage with its precious freight rolling
down tho embankment and many wero
slan but few were saved I suppose wheo
they wiote home they wrote witlr congrat-
ulation at their rescue The angels of God
look down and they see men driving on the
edg6 Of great precipices of ruin and danger
drawn by wild leaping foaming and un-
governable perils in this life and if any
shall escape before they capsizo do yon not
suppose tho angeld of God rejoice crying
Good good Saved from sin saved from
death saved from hell saved forever
The supremo court of the United States
does not adjourn for anything trifling It
must be the death of a cabinet minister or
the death of a president or some matter of
very great moment When I find all heaven
adjourning Its other joys for this Ono joy
I make up my mind it is of very great im
portaicb If heaven can afford to adjourn all
other festivities to celebrate this ono
triumph Do you wonder that so many of
these Christian people have tolled night and
and day in this work of soulsaving if it is
of suck vast importance Do jo wonder
that Nettleton and Finley and Bishop
Asbury and John Wesley and George
Whitfield and Paul and angals and
Christ and God stripped themselves for
tho work Around that ono soul circles
the mist tho lire the darkness the joy the
anthem the wailing the hallelujah and
the woe Of Gods universe Ifthesonl is
saved then lip comes to trumpet and
fingers to harp and hammer to bell and
thero is joy among the angels of God over
that One soul forgiven For such a soul I
plead
Having found in my own experience that
thisieligionisacomfortaada Joy I stand
here to commend it to you In the days of
my infancy I was carried by Christian
parents to the house of God and conse-
crated in baDtism to tho Fathor and the
Son and tho Holy Ghost but that did not
savemg In after tune I was tanghtto
kneel at the Christian family altar with
father and molheiand brothers and sisters
the most of them now in glory but that did
not save as In after taa I read Dodd
ridges liise and Progress and Baxters I At all events the farmers say that they will
Call to the Unconverted and all the re try and tako hold of the reins of the gOv
ligious book3 around ray fathers house
hold but that did not savo me But one
day the voice of Christ camo into my heart
saying Repent repent believe believe
and I accepted tho offer of mercy and
though no doubt there was more joy in
heaven over the conversion of other souls
becausp of their farreachiog influence I
Terily believO when I gave my heart to
God there were some spirits in heaven the
gladder for the deed
There is joy in heaven among the angels
of God over one sinner that ropenteth
Turn this day to tho Lord who bought ou
Let this whole audience surrender them-
selves to Jesus Christ If for ten twenty
fifty years you havs not prajed begin now
to pray O you say I cant priy
Can you not say God bo mdrcif ul to me a
sinner No you saj I cant say that
Then can you not look to the tbrono of
morcy No you say I cant look up
Can yon not then give some signal like that
which was given by tho lad in tho hospital
He was sick and suffering and dying and
wanted speedily to go away from all suffer-
ing and pain and he said to his comrades
ih the hospital It is strahgo to mo that
Jesus doesnt see ma when he goes through
here nights and takes others to himself
He goes through herejand ho doesnt see me
I must be asleep and he doesnt know I
want to go
Now i tell you how Ill arrango it Ill
go to sleep with my hafid up andthen
when Jesus comes through tho hospital by
night ho will see my hand lifted and he
will know by that I want to go with him
So it was done For that night Jesus wont
through the hospital and took tho suffering
lad and tha next morning tho nurso pass-
ing through tho wards of tho hospital saw-
n dead fiand lifted braced on ono side
against tho pillow and the loft hand hold-
ing tho elbow of the right arm Jesns had
seen the signal and answered it O sick
soul woundedsoul dying soul canst thou
not glvo somo signal Wilt thou not lift
one hand or ono prayer God grant that
this day there may be joy in heaven among
the angels of God over your soul forgiven

Tho Wealth Producers
St Louis Mo Fob Sl Every incom-
ing train today brought hordes of horny
handed sons of toil who come to attend tho
largest convention of wealth producers
ever assembled at any one time Imme-
diately upon arrival they were
conducted to their assigned
quarters by tho various reception commit-
tees Among tho leaders of the various or-
ganizations tho Sabbath was not one of
rest but rather a day cf labor and to somo
extent one of anxiety On tho
other hand somo of the lay delegates
spent tha day in sightseeing and
ehjovment whilo otjiers lounged about the
hotel corridors quietly discussing the prob-
lems which they hd como hero to solve
whila still others wero standing in
groups in animated conversation over
the probabilities of a third party being
placed in tho field Associated Press
reporters made tho rdnnds Of tha various
hotels whero the husbandmen are stopping
and tho result shows that a great many
delegates aro in favor of putting candi-
dates in tho field for the presidency
and vicepresidency while others say
that tho time has not yet
arrived for such action that ono of tha old
parties may jet adopt a platform which
will meotr the views of tho agriculturists
and working men and that there is time
enough for action Tha latter though are
in a very small minority and it
is not at all likely that they
can carry tho day when tha question is
brought before the convention which will
open at 3 oclock tomorrow
Mr G F Washburn chairman of
the national finance committee Of
thd Peoples party in an inter-
view with A Associated Press reporter
this evening Said I believe that the
confederated industrial conference which
meets tomorrow will tako independent
political action Thero is no doubt that a
committee will be appointed by this con-
vention which will be authorized to act
in conjunction with the national committee
of the peoples party in calling a national
nominating convention beforo Juno L I
believe tha platform will be brief contain-
ing but few planks but it will ba vary clear
cut aud plain in tone Tho tido
seems to be hourly rising in favor
of independent action and by tomorrow it
will be irresistible
If Livingstone Terrell and MaCuna at-
tempt to resist it they will be literally
swept out Of the way Delegates that
havo arrived from their states claim that
their constituencies will repudiate them
if they attempt to oppose tho majority
conference and that life would ba made
miserable on their return home after tho
conference
From present indications it would seem as
though this would be tho largest and most
important industrial conference 6ver held
in this country It is estimated that there
will bo from three to ten thousand visitors
in tho city during its session
The above about expresses the senti-
ments of the leaders of tha new movement
and it will not be surprising if the schema
to hold a national nominating convention 13
carried thnwea vjUh a wiso and hurrah
ernment for a while and see whether or not
they can ameliorate their condition which
they say is becoming unbearable

To Republicans
To the Republican Voters or the Sixth Con-
gressional District of Texas
GrvtiEMEX I wish to briefly call your
attention to my claim to the position of
chairman of the Sixth congressional dis-
trict of Texas At the state convention
that met at San Antonio Sept 8 1S90 J
M McCormick of Dallas held the proxy
of Dr J L Edwards of Ennis who was
our duly elected chairman After urgent
solicitation on the part of somo of the Tar
rant county delegation Mr McCormick did
call tho Sixth district in tho absence of
most of the delegation from Tarrant county
and as for the letter of the gentleman Mr
Hart who was elected chairman of the so
called Cleburne convention and ha3 made
himself the champion of tbo usurping party
it will bo seen that there were no moro than
two of tbo Tarrant county delegation pres
ent out of tho whole delegation v ho wero
ailreadyand anxious to meet with the
Sixth district in convention Tho claim
that is now set up by tho champion secre-
tary of tho Sixth district is that Cot Big-
ger was elected chairman of the district
and declined to serve and at the same
meeting before adjournment that the name
of A Brownleo was proposed and that he
was elected Thero are letters now from
Secretary Hart in the hands of persons
who were delegates to said convention ask-
ing them to substantiate tho above the
samo statement having been made by him
at Cleburne Mr McCormick was there
and indorsed and confirmed the secretary
and he having been the chairman of the San
Antonio convention should have been well
informel in regard to what was done there
Tho following letters will show what these
gentlemen had to say about this matter loss
than ono month after tho meeting of the
state convention at San Antonio and what
they said at Cleburne and say now over
seventeen months after said convention
Tho following is a correct copy of a letter
signed by J M McCormick in answer to a
question of mine of what was dono in re-
gard to electing a chairman and nominating
a man for congress at San Antonio The
following is the answer
DALLAS Tex Sept22183a
G W Gillespie Esq Fort Worth Tex
Dear Sib Your favor of tho 15th instant
Just received On my return from Missouri
If thero was no corgressional fconvention
held at San Antonio I think there should
bo one held to put up a candidate Dr
Darter is agreeable to me but he can not
get the full vote unless regularly nomi-
nated Yours truly
J M McCormick
The following from Mr J G Hart who
places great stress upon my being chair-
man of the Twentieth senatorial district
As I do not owo my position to the agency
of Mr Hart I cannot see whero this
cuts any figure in the case The letters are-
as follows
Dallas Tex Sept 301380
G W Gillespie FortWorth Tex
Deak Sin CoL Bigger just informed me
that you had written him and signed your-
self chairman of the Sixth congressional
district No I think thero is a mistake
in some way Yon are no doubt chairman
of tho senatorial district in which you live
but not of the Sixth congressional district
We held a congressional convention whilo at
San Antonio at which CoL J C Bigger
was elected chairman and myself secretary
Two gentlemen from Tarrant partici-
pated in that meeting Ono of them was
CoL Goff of Fort Worth Now wo are
not at all contentious in the matter but
want to mako no mistake I also under-
stand that Dr Darter of the Fort is a can-
didate for congress If so let us get to-
gether and indorse or nominate him regu-
larly and onranlze a nlan by which we can
give him a hearty support Let me hear
immediately Yours fraternally
J C Hart
In the above it will be observed that J
C Bigger was elected which we all admit
and as this was written but twentysoven
days after the convention it is no doubt
correct CcL Bigger having declinedthere
was a vacancy in that position Six days
after his letter to mo ths champion Secre-
tary addresses the following to tho honor-
able chairman of tho stato executivo com
mittee which Mr Mo Daniel sent to me in
letter dated tho 14th Of September two
days after having appointed me chairman
of the Sixth district To try and adjust
this matter in some way that is satisfac-
tory The following i3 tha letter from

Deak Sin Yours of tho 29th instant to
hand contents duly noted and
must say your views are fully
in accord with mines and those of the
club We havd just organized here there-
fore your reply was very satisfactory
Now another question I want to raise is
this while at San Antonio we held a con-
gressional convention of the Sixth district
composed of six counties towit Dallas
Tarrant Bosqne Kaufman Hill and John-
son Ellis left out and of the six counties
Bosque Tarrant Dallas andKaufmsn were
represented There it was conceded unan-
imously that Dallas should have the chair-
manship and COL J O Bigger was elected
without opposition yet under protest he
statiDC that he did not want it that he had
held ths position before ho finally agreed
to accept in the event no other Dallas man
wanted it I had been elected secretary
Then when we got all the Dallas delegation

In the Hart letter written to me on tha
80th of September Col Bigger is named by
him as being chairman and six days after-
ward October 6th ingthe Daniel letter
A Brownlee is named by our eminent
secretary as being chairman made so as he
says in the same letter by tho Dallas dele-
gation thirtythree days after tho San An-
tonio convention where and when the sec-
retary now says Brownlee was elected
Upon inquiry I find there was no agree
meent made at the congressional conven-
tion whereby Dallas should have the chair-
man and if there had been CoL Bigger
could not delegate his power to another
nor could the Dallas delegation rep-
resent tho whole of tha Sixth congressional
district by naming anyone as chairman
other than CoL Bigger Before my ap-
pointment as chairman on the 12th of Sep-
tember I found out that CoL Bigger would
not serve and I was appointed to fill the
vacancy eighteen days beforo Secretary

vacancy
