A S Mercer editor of the Livestock
Journal Cheyenne Wyo who was in
attendance on the recent cattlemens con-
Tention held in this city writes his paper
from Velasco an entertaining Texas letter
In a general resume of the stock business
of the state and conditions as they exist ho
says On the tray hither the corn planters
showed up on either side of ttie railroad
after leaving Fort Worth and the cotton
fields are being made ready for the seed
Texas has a corn capacity greater than any
other state of the union yet she is today
importing corn from Kansas More corn
and less cotton would make more prosperity
and less hard times would yield a smaller
number of calamity howlers
The fact is that before Texas can become
the great beefproducing state nature iu
tended iertoboshe must raise more corn
and top out her cotton seed mealfed
cattle Ninety days on cotton seed meal
and sixty on corn with a little meal as
an accompaniment will make tho choicest
of beef and make it at a costso low that
no other state can compete
Losses on Texas ranges this year are
proving very light Cattle were thin at the
beginning of winter and the general ex-
pectations wore that heavy losses would bo
experienced The winter fortunately has
been the mildest for years and the herds
have come through in good condition A
few days more and the risks will all have
been taken
