Within the first few months of a child's life, it takes
the first steps in the various branches of human learning.
As it reaches out to grasp objects in its sight, it is form-
ing the concept space and hence is learning Geometry.
As it handles objects it is acquiring the concepts matter
and physical properties. It is learning Physics. The
child who tried to grasp the full moon was learning
Astronomy. When a child gazes at its mother's face
and coos back at her words, it is learning to talk. It is
reciting a Language Lesson.
Later when the child can find its way to school and
back, it has extended its knowledge of Geography.
When it understands why the car should stop at stop
signs, it is learning Government. Fortunate is the
child whose formal instruction is directed by one who
adjusts her teaching to its ever expanding experience.
The study of Geography, Government, and History
should extend from the community to the county and
thence to the state.
It requires a real teacher to interpret government to
her students from the management of the city and the
county, to teach science from blooming plants and sing-
ing birds, to visualize the landscape as the work of
flowing streamlets and shifting winds, and to evaluate
history from community traditions; but such teaching
