OUR TURN: SA leaders answer editorial

Editor's note: Last week'

echelon of the Students Associa-
tion: Preatdent Kenny Wrfeon

In last week's Optimist the
editorial presented loint ques-
tion about the 8A Comtrtuticn
plan nave been made tor a long
time to do 10 However the
Optimist made mm point that
I can clarify.
1) The Optimist said that I
nave appointed two aenatoM.
have not appointed anyone.
.Concerning Senate representa-
tives I brought the name before
Senate and stated their qualifica-
tions. The members of Senate
moved and voted unanimously
for the two representatives to be
senators. (The constitution does
not allow for the SA President
to appoint senator he can
merely recommend. A person
recommended thto way must
have 23 approval of Senate.
They received unanimous approval.
I have not planned to appoint
the communication senator but
to select him through an election
amonf the media group in
volved (KACC Optimlet Prickly
Pear etc) At the time of lat
week's printing KACC had atiH
not selected n representative
according to Jeff Warr KACC
sponsor.
2) The Optimist stated feat

judgment of those groups in that
regard therefore she Senate is
not "scleetmg then own eua-
tors." 3) The Optimist aeks that "if
there are no 'stout' organise-
ttons should they be repre-
sented?" I feel that in most
cases such as the religious
representative a person with
superior knowledge about a
certain aspect of campus life will
make Senate stronger. We need
someone who works directly
with planning religious activities;
we Med someone who is actively
involved in the scholarship
organisations. Why not heve
people who can offer superior
knowledge in certain areas to
Senate. All of these
together will combine to make a
totally representative group.
4) The Optimiet asked why
we coutdnt have "new blood in
Senate." More than half of thto
year's Senate have neve been in
Senate including the Religious
Organisation representative and
the Fep Organisation representa-
tive. True we need new blood
but we alee need experience.
5) The Optimist asks "doeen
Meek voting in the SA render
their aetions as absurd" To my
knowledge there nee been no
block voting in the student body
for Senate election.
The Optimist moved "to have
aH of the senators elected
now." We have elected all the
senator we eaa so far. When the
men s etonnv eteci prsswenw anu
when KACC elects their repre-
sentative we witi be able to have
a complete Senate not until
wHrtte
The Optimiet said that I need
to realise that Senate is to be a
"group of divergent people
bringing their diverse (and some-
times oppoeing) Ideas into fo-
cus." I agree. This to why we
hare representatives from vari-
ous .organisation to acquire
diverse knowledge and thus
represent student effectively.
Thank you
As a Junior Senator by
election and aa Election Com-
mittee chairman for the SA this
year I have reacted both favor-

admit that the gkk often have
some valid criticisms But I think
they wettt just a little too far m
some appearances they made last
week before State Education
Commtosloner J. W. Edgar. The
occasion was a hearing before
the commissioner on proposed
textbooks for usage in Texas.
Some 316 books are under
consideration by the State Text-
book Committee which will hold
a formal hearing October 9. This
testimony before Commhwioner
Edgar w preliminary in nature.
