Tour reporter was there Wed-
nesday afternoon, and humbled
ua we saw how many young people
were there, how gracioualy Mrs
Jackson, the librarian, helped
those young rru*adera in the
wide, wide world of LIGHT. And
we were rather grateful that our
“teenage" curiosity had led us to
fiad out even such a simple thing
as the fact that tha Constitution
of Alaska does not provide for
counties in that 49th State.
It would be a lot of fun for us
who dislike to “grow in the mid-
dle" so alarmingly, if we would,
like Bacon of Shakespeare's day.

and perhapa we should have few-

saw an example of the fact that

country, as well a* a great satis-

Thanks for reading, friends,
and goodbye now.
THIS 18 RACK-SLAPPING,
job-seeking time In Washington.
There la an air of guarded opti-
mism In the transition, which is
in keeping with tradition.
On the one hand, many skeptic*
express approval of the cabinet
selections, indicating moderation,
stemming chiefly from such
choices as Billon for Treasury
and Rusk to head the State De-
partment.
At the same time, eyebrows
are raised and doubts expressed
over such appointments as youth-
ful and Inexperienced Bobby Ken-
nedy for Attorney General and the
horde of college professors, main-
ly from Harvard, who have been
placed In hey spots, particularly
as economic advisors.
“But." you can hear msny
comment, ’maybe It will work
out".
ON T1IK SPENDING SIDE,
there Is more pessimism in the air.
Msny budget-busters are dreaming
up tome spending dilly* A Ken-
nedy-appointed Task Force, head-
ed by free-HP* nding, liberal Sena-
tor Douglas of Illinois, himself a
former college professor, in a re-
cent report on how to cope with
unemployment, calls for an lm-
mediate outlay of $3 billion In
grants, loans, etc., to affecte l
areas. Thla could precipitate a run
on the Treasury because nearly
every community In the country
at one time or another has un-
employment problems.
Another Task Force, headed by
Professor Horde, president of
Pnrdus, demands a federal aid
for edncsAjou program that would
coot «t.« billion tha flrat yoar.
In addition, aovaral naw bu-
reaus, agencies, and special jobs
as “caars". '•oxpodjtors”. etc., are
propoeed. somewhat reminiscent
of depression’s Naw Deal daya.
But much of thla must be clear-
ed through Congress, where the
real battles will be fought. The
radical-liberals In Congress. In
bogh the House and Senate, are
presently jockeying for change*
In procedural rules which they
claim is needed to speed up ac-
tion on vast and varied spending
proposals that are being offered.
If the Congress relaxes its dili-
gence the free spenders could
have a field day this year.
Only time will tell. Let ua hope
that the new President will, with
courage, wisdom and fore*lght,
rise to the occasion. He ia faced
with a very difficult ta*k. It I*
the duty of every American to
support and encourage him whoa
they conscientiously can. Thla la
deed a time for anlty.
