LOSE OPENER TO TEXAS TECH 86-81
Jackets Trip McMurry
In Snyder Consolation
SNYDER Dec. 11. The Howard
Payne College Yellow Jackets
took consolation honors of the
Canyon Reef Invitation cage
tournament here Saturday night
by rolling over the McMurry In-
dians 72-64.
Texas Tech who barely nipped
HPC 86-81 in first round play
won the championship by de
feating North Texas State 73-66.
Dan Owen 6-1 senior forward
was selected as the outstanding
player of the tournament as he
paced the Yellow Jackets in
scoring and was a top rebounder
and defensive player throughout
the two-day meet.
Owen dropped in 10 field
goals and added six free shots
to tally 26 points against Mc-
Murry. He scored 17 against
Tech in the opener. George
Moore and Damon Miller fol-
lowed with 11 and 10 points re-
spectively. Melvin White who
was HPCs high scorer against
the Red Raiders dropped in 7.
The Stingers were hounded
the first half but were never
behind in the final two quarters
as they ripped the cords for 40
points in the last half.
' Howard Payne led 16-15 at
the end of the initial stanza but
the count was knotted 32-32 at
half-time. The Yellow Jackets
came back strong as the third
quarter started and held a 56-
42 margin at the three-quarter
mark.
Fred
Shelton paced the Mc-
Murry attack with 18 points and

In Friday night's los to
Texas Tech the HPC basket-
eers served notice that they will
be after the loop bunting when
Texas Conference action gets un-
derway in January.
The Stingers bounced out to
take a 20-18 lead at the end of
the first quarter but fell behind
41-30 by halftime. The Red
Raiders were still in front 63
to 49 at the three-quarter mark
but a last quarter scoring blitz
moved the Jackets to the final
socre 86-81.

Eagles of North Texas State.
The Lumberjacks who will re-

practically the same team as last
year with six lettermen and one
squadman returning. Heading the
ijst of lettermen is Gerald Cecil
a two letterman who set a new

year. He is a guard and stands

strongly favored to gain the
Border Conference title this sea-
son and have already chalked up
impressive wins over some of
the top teams in the South.
It was White who paced the
Howard Payne scoring brigade
Friday night by dropping in
eight field goals and five free
tosses for 21 points. HPCs Owen
and D. Miller followed with 17
and 15 points respectively.
The Blue and old will return
to the homecourt Tuesday night
to face a strong invading band
of Trinity Tigers.
5'10". Bobby Flanagan 5'H" se-
nior guard with three letters and
Joe Johnson 6'1" junior letter-
man guard are also returning to
pose a three-way fight for the
starting guard positions.
At center the Lumberjacks will
probably start Lloyd Giles a 6'5"
junior with one letter. Alternating
with him will be senior Don Lade
a 6'4" player out for the first
time and Bob Rhoades 6'8"
freshman from New York.
Paul Alford 6'3" senior with
two letters and Murray Shaw
6'4" junior with one letter are the
returning letterman forwards.
Glenn Pearson the only returning
squadman transferred to the
school from Tyler JC in the mid-
dle of last season. He is a forward.
The Lumberjacks also have sev-
eral promising newcomers in
James Sitton and Bruce Norman
from junior colleges and fresh-
man Roy Carroway who was all-
state in Louisiana last season.
At Denton the Jackets will
probably find even tougher com-
petition in the Eagles who have
ten returning lettermen from last
years squad which won 20 and
lost 5 in winning the Gulf Coast
Conference championship.
At center the Eagles have El-
mer Beard 6'7" senior with two
letters and Freddie Hopkins 6'6"
sophomore with one letter. At
guard they will send out Bob
Garner 6' senior letterman; Tom
Hooper 6' junior with two letters;
Jimmy Powell 6'1" sophomore
letterman and James Palmer 6'
senior with one letter. At the for-
ward posts we find Bervin Hoop-
er 6'2" senior with three letters;
Kendel Banks 6'3" senior with
two letters; Calvin Axtell 6'4"
senior with three letters; and Joe
Mitchell 6'2" sophomore letter-
man. If it were not tough enough al-
ready on opposing teams for the
Eagles to have two lettermen for
every position they also have a
top crop of freshmen up for their
first year of college competition.
Two of these freshmen were on
all-state teams last year and sev-
eral were all-district.
The Yellow Jackets under
Coach Bill Hinton are expected
to field about the same team
meaning Damon Miller at center
Dan Owen and Wency White at
forwards and George Moore and
Bill Boyd at guards. Others who
will probably see action are Ken-
neth Miller Joe Brown Ben El-
liott Charlie Meadows and Sam
Taylor.

Abilene Christian Texas A&I
and Austin College withdrew
from the loop but it came as no
surprise.
ACC had already announced
that it would leave the confer-
ence and made it official at the
Dallas meeting. Texas A&I quit
to join the Lone Star Confer-
ence while Austin will join ACC
to seek an independent schedule
next year.

The Austin withdrawal came
as the result of an ineligibility
ruling of two Kangaroo gridders
that gave Howard Payne a for-
feit victory early in the grid
season.
Jerome Vannoy of McMurry
president of the conference
ruled Center Jack Taylor and
Halfback Billy Bookout ineligi-
ble because the pair had played
two years of football at other
! two
senior colleges. The loop upheld
the ruling and Austin dropped
out.
Representing Howard Payne
at the two-day meeting were
Guy Gardner head coach and
athletic director and J. H. (Cap)
Shelton faculty representative
to the conference.
