Senior football lettermen last
night consummated one of the
year's outstanding attractions
with the burning of the annual
freshman bonfire.
The 20-foot square 60-foot
high hastily - constructed edifice
was set ablaze at about 7:30 p.m.
following a large Homecoming
pep rally in the ACC track stadium.
AMBITIOUS FISH began bon
fire plans days prior to the actual
undertaking. Scrap lumber was
spotted all over town by fresh
man president Ken Coker and
followers and stored in vacant
lots. Abllene's city commission
donated several condemned hous-
es to be torn down and used for
firewood.
Last year's freshman class of-
ficers Bob Randolph and Dick
Mathews also aided the fish by
lining up trucks and electrical
wiring. Randolph commented that
the class of '63 has "good officers
and good spirit."
CONSTRUCTION of the mas-
sive lumber pile which was lo-
cated southeast of the stadium
began Wednesday at 10 p.m.
At the pep rally more than
3000 persons participated in
school yells led by the cheerlead-
ers. The Big Purple presented
several marches.
Mrs. Joye Davenport Kelly was
presented as the first annual
Coming Home queen. Cheerlead-
ers from various eras in ACC
history took part in a special
yelling session.
Football Coach N. L. (Nick)
Nicholson introduced the starters
co-captains and seniors who will
be playing against Trinity uni-
versity today.
Barbecue Cooks Prepare
For Feeding of Multitude
By BOB STEWART
Free barbeque. Time for the
big Homecoming feast is at 11:0
this morning.
At 3 a.m. drowsy workers be-
gan preparing 2000 pounds of
ham for the occasion. Beans were
boiled and potatoes cut while
more workers came in at inter-
vals. BY 11:30 this morning 149
cafeteria workers will have
turned out a meal to feed 5000
people.
"Last year we fed 4500 people
in 45 minutes" sold Nell Fry
manager of the cafeteria. Helping
the regular staff of the cafeteria
will be 120 social club members
Tables will be set in the street
for the various reuniting classes.
In the cafeteria tables will be
set for the members of the 1909-
19 classes. All persons going
through the barbecue line must
have tickets which can be ob-
tained at the registration booths.
If it rains the meal will be in
the gym. A low flying cloud kept
last year's staff running between
the gym and cafeteria.
Following the open air chapel
this morning Circle K ushers
will form lines to go to the cafe-
teria. The lines will go around
the administration building and
around the science building.
THESE LINES arc to go in the
side doors of the cafeteria and
out the front doors when the per-
sons have been served.
