I have witnessed some strange
performances around fires in a
country town and have known
the strictest economy and wildest
extravagance to go on at the
same time. I have seen a crowd
of men around a burning real
denoe null the shrubbery up by
the roots and carring it out of
reach of the flames, while
another crowd wonld be engaged
in throwing bric-a-brac and china
ware from a second story win
dow. I have seen a dozen able
bodied men tug with might and
main to save $8.25 worth of
matting on a floor and allow a
$400 piano to burn up in the
same room. I once saw a fellow
rash into a burning bouse and
pitch a $25 mirror and the family
clock out of a window on to a
pile of rock, and then rush out
with a pair of dog irons and
tenderly deposit them in a fence
corner 200 yards away.
I missed some of the best fires
that ever took place in the little
town I used to live in,on account
of them being pulled off after I
had gone to bed and not being
able to find enough clothes to ap-
pear before a mixed audience.
There is nothing on earth quite so
exasperating, as to be suddenly
aroused out 6t a deep slumber
by the wild clang of the village
fire bell, the firing of guns and
the glad shouts of your neigh-
bors as they joyfully pass your
house on their way to the fire,
not be able to find anything to
wear but a b#se supporter and
a collar.
There is nothing more pathetic
than to hear a husband and
father in the dead hours of night
pleading with his family to as.
eiet him in finding enough clothes
to wear to a fire and have said
family ignore bis gentle plead-
ings pnd rash off in a body to
the conflagration. I have crawled
on my all fours first and last at
the dark hoars of night in a 12
by 14 foot room at least 275 miles
trying to find my “breeches” or
main normal taring ; s fliw no
matter how unimportant the fftw
in a town of less than 4000 In-
ba dtants.
One of the most Important
personages of a small town la

Nothing sends a chill down my
spinal oolemnon shorter notloe,
nor awes me into breathless
silence quicker and makes me
feel my utter insignifloaaae more
instanter than to bear the oap-
tain of a village fire company
giving orders In a loud voice to
his subordinates during a mighty
conflagration of a cow shed.
I never attend a fire that 1
don’t think of Hawk Henderson
the captain of the first fire com
pany organized in our town.
Our fire department inventoried
only 17 feet of hose, five pine
buckets, two 9 foot ladders and
a hose truck made from two bag-
gy wheels of different heights
but what we lacked In eqnip-
page was made up by the strict
discipline of onr captain.
Our company was composed
of the best citizens of our town
both from a physical and moral
standpoint. A fellow not only
had to have brawn and muscle
to be a member of our fire com-
pany, but - character as well.
Luke Jenkins who stood 6 feet
4 inches in his sock feet, and
could stand flat footed and jump
over a ten rail fence was refused
admittance, because he had told
Parson Watte to his face that
be didn!t believe that a whale
swallowed Jonah; and Lige
Hawkins, a man in the prime of
life who could out wrestle oit
jump and out run any man in
town was turned down on ac-
count of a alight blemish in his
family history—his father bad
fought in the Union Army.
But 1 started to tell what a strict
disciplinarian Hawk Henderson
was. The first fire we had In
our town after organizing the
Fire Fighters,” Hawk gave a
public exhibition of his Napol-
eonic discipline. One of the
members while on the roof of
the burning building addressed
the captain by the familiar name
of “Hawk,” the same as he
called him on unofficial occasions
while working on a dray line.
No sooner had the plebeian name
of “Havgk” been applied to our
captain than he gave a thunder,
ing command for the offending
member to come down from the
roof and approached him at once.
When the trembling member
approached him, he tore the red
ribbon badge inscribed “Fire
Fighters” from off the poor
fellow’s bosom, thereby reducing
him to the ranks of an ordinary
citizen.
The captain explained to the
spectators after the bouse had
burned why he had ripped the
official emblem from the stomach' jua"t left!
