.Legion Barbecue, July 4. It is with
extreme sadness that we realize that
One of the mo*, ntragtrrt deeds that tas darkened the annals of Pa-1
no I j County, was perpetrated last Sunday afternoon by three armed men
upon the defenseless person of Rev. LelanO Malone aa he waa going to a
baptizing pool to administer the ordinance af baptism for Fairplay Baptist
Church. For two hour* these “bullies' had run the roads inquiring all about
for the preacher. Hs was all alone at the home of S. T. Allison and was not
well. Before the crowd of people went past the Allison place to the creek
where the baptizing was to take place, these mad and roaring desperadoes
passed down the road and went to another home asking for the preacher.
I A merciful God kept him under His hand, and though many persona knew
these fellow* were threatening dir* vengeance puon this crippled preacher, ’
no one had the courage to come and tell nim hit life was endangered—and I
he went on the road absolutely ignorant of their piot to beat him up. Going
som 400 yards down the road in company with two deacons, who knew of tie
threats but had not warned the preacher; h* met the three would-be assassins
in the road, and the outraged “gent" who was to rid Fairplay of Paraon Malone .
for all time to come rushed from the car to the buggy in which the preacher
was ruling and told hirn o get out. The preacher could see hi# assailant was
white-hot, but not even suspecting trouble, was unprepared to defend himself
Drawing a heavy car wrench from his hip pocket, which looked l‘ke a sure
enough gun play, this chivalrous bully hit the preacher a cruel blow over the
heart and knocked him to the ground. The lick was meant for the head. .
Sam Allison managed to hold the assailants arm so he did not strike Bro
Malone again as he held him prostrate on the ground He agreed to end his
assoult if Bro. Malone would forever keep away from Fairpr^y. His confed
crates stood armed to see that "foul play’’ went on to their heart's con
tent. The baptizing was not held and Bro. Malone came on to Carthage and
sent for a physician who bound up the wound over hia heart. Complaint has
been filed and the assailants are to be arrested. Two years ago this same
preacher was preaching against bootlegging, gambling and other vices in a
Panola County community and tome fellows attempted to egg him, but missed
their mark. Denunciation of boot-lagging and kindred evils caused this as-
sault, though the offended party cliams tse preacher had seriously reflected
upon his good name about another matter.
To say the least of it, the attack was cowardly, since Bro. Malone is
almost as helpless as a baby when it comes to defending himself. It is a
positive diegrsce to Panola County, and the Watchman refueas to believe that
the people of Fairplay endorse such actions.

Tours for victory. ABOUT THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE.
GEO C. HENRY, Pastor. | -
———•«-— To the voters of Panola County:
I am endeavoring to see every voter,
man and woman. In the county before
August 26, hut in the event 1 do not
see all, I wish to drop this word with
you:
My opponent states that he has
had ’he Sheriff's office ONLY ONE
ELECTIVE TERM, but falls to say
that he has had it THE GREATER
PART OF ONE TERM. BY APPOINT-
MENT of the Commissioners Court,
Sheriff Smiley having served only
from December 1st, 1918 to Aug. 11,
1919 of his new term, when he re-
signed dnd my'.opponent was appoint-
ed Sheriff.
My sense of appreciation of a faith-
ful officer's services and of justice
would have prevented my asking for
the office of Sheriff had my opponent
had the office ONLY ONE TERM;
however, I consider thAt he has prac-
tically had the office TWO TERMS,
or will have had with the completion
of this term. In view of these prem-
ises. I ask your support and Influ-
ence. I do not promise you that I
shall make the best sheriff In the
world, but to make the best that It
Is poss.ble for me to make, with your
co operation!
Yours to serve,
LEO BIRD,
Candidate for Sheriff.
