Js this a fast—to l^ecp
The larder loan,
And clean
From fat ol veals and sheep ?

Of flesh, jet still
To till

Is it to fast an honr,
Or ragged go—
Or show
A downcast look, and sour ?
No; ’tis a fast to dole
Thy sheaf of wheat,
And meat,.
\Jnto the hungry soul.
It le to fast from strifo,
From old debate,
And hate;
And circumcise thy life.
To show a heart greef-rent;

How women have gained such ac-

present to examine; that they have
gained it, is one ofthose “established
facts,” to which men learn to recon-

Certainly they have not become

rule by tlieir intellectual power, is
[likewise very small. Fools are

Walker, the victim of Thursday’s
prize fight, was attended today by
thousands of people, the struggle to
see his remains being so great as to
require the presence of police. The
face of the dead man was badly dis-
figured and swollen. To the an-
nouncement of the funeral in the
Ledger, was appended the lines:
None knew him but to love,
None named him but to praise.
And attached to a large- anchor of1
flowers upon his coffin was a card j
upon which was written :
iSafe in the arms of Jesus,
Safe on his genllc breast,
Theie by bis love overshadowed,
May bis soul vest.
There was considerable trouble
in getting a clergyman to attend the
funeral, several' positively refusing
to officiate, among them were the

console himself with the reflection
that tire mismanagement has only

We have no disposition to wound
the feelings of mourners, nor to
say severe things of the dead ; but
for a preacher to preach off to heav-

BY MRS. AMELIA E. BVRR.
I am inclined to think that there
19 nowhere in Abe civilized world a
more general sense of conjugal
honor than in the United biates.
A wife may know her husband to
be full of unbearable weaknesses,
but no sooner does i friend share
bw opinion than, as Nancy Lam-
meter said, “she tarns round and
praises him as if she wanted to sell
him.”
The number of comfortable, hap
j$y marriages are really amazing,
when we consider the sheer
thoughtlessness with which men
and women “ risk each other.” The
maiden who was married one morn-
ing as she went into the garden for
“ parse ley to stuff'a- rabbit,” has
t^V.er, wanted imitators. Neither
is thera any fixed principle on
which men pick out wives. Liking
is said to go by contraries,, but this
if only a mischievous half truth.
Men anxious to escape from their
own monotony may find in an ex-
actly opposite character a fresh,
piquent page of human nature, bin
^e grcat question for a man is, not
what kind of a wife is best in the
abstract, but what kind is best lor
him individually.
Marriage ought lobe an accession
©/ moral strength as well as of hap-
piness, and a wjf© should bring
those endowments, of head and
heart which supplement, or balance,
those of the husband. But a man
ip love is not a reasonable creature,
aod therefore, however heretical it
is to say it, “ the angel in the house
often turns out a bore.”
No condition of life is so full of
paradoxes. It may bo a mistake
for a- thoughtful man to marry a
pushing creature without two ideas
in her head ; or for.a public man to
marry a woman like the laty men-
tioned h./ Dr. Teqnuvilie, who ran | A IIapp.y Home.—“ Six tilings,”

the pastor, “if thou believest with

response given. Then, amid the
most breathless silence on the part
of tho people, the brother quietly
stepped down into the water. Very
solemnly was the unexpected can

pastor,, who said:. •“ My brother,
before I baptize you, let me ask you,
in the presence of those asoCinbled,

response.. “ Then,” said the pastor,
“though coming, after tlic most un-
