HOMELESS TOPIC IN CHAPEL
Cast of Five Will Perform
Readers Theatre Script May 3
DISCOVERER OF TITANIC TO
SPEAK IN BEHRENS APRIL 23

Dr. Robert Ballard the scientist
who discovered the R.M.S.
Titanic will be speaking on the
HSU campus. "High Adventure in
the Deep Frontier" will be the topic
of Dri Ballard's presentation. The
event will be April 23 at 8 p.m. in
Behrens Auditorium and is free to
the public. Funding has been pro-
vided by the Cullen Fund for Facul-
ty Enrichment and the HSU Brand.
Dr. Charles Lane assistant pro-
fessor of geology at HSU stresses
the magnitude of this event. "To
my knowledge" Lane said "no
scientist of Dr. Ballard's caliber
has ever been In Abilene before
now.' He is a world-renowned
geojqqjst who should interest
every age group."
Ballard was In a unique position
while he was attending school in
the late 60s and early 70s. It was at
this time that tho theory of
platetechtonlcs was introduced.
One of the ideas in this theory was
4hat new crust was constantly be-
ing formed in the middle of the
ocean. Ballard was the one who
tested this idea and once proved
held the new theory together.
"This discovery was extraor-
dinarily important in that it was a
culminating type of research done
to tie up the loose ends of
platetechtonics" Lane said. "It
was this discovery" continued
Lane "that made Ballard's creden-
tials known in the scientific world.
The discovery of the Titanic
brought him popular recognition."
There should be something of in-
terest to everyone in Dr. Ballard's
presentation. He is not only the
discoverer of the Titanic but
also of the Blsmark. He will also
be leading dives in the Mediterra-
nean Sea. With these varied in-
terests and his impressive creden-
tials every person regardless of
age or education will be able to
enjoy this event.
Dr. Ballard received his
undergraduate degree in Geology
and Chemistry from the University
of California. He attended
graduate school ai the University
of Southern California and the
University of Hawaii's Graduate
School in Oceanography. He earn-
ed a Ph.D. in Marine Geology and
Geophysics from the University of
Rhode Island.

A readers theatre script concer-
ning homelessness will be the
featured presentation in the last
chapel of the Spring semester. Ms.
Charla Markham interim faculty
member in the communication
department adapted the script and
will direct the cast of five. HSU
students performing are Denise
Box Grant English Beth Rickman
Scott Sheldon and Joyce Wascom.
Markham first started thinking
about the topic of homelessness
in November when she attended a
convention in San Francisco. The
city was "teeming with the
homeless-families young adults
and teenagers people like you and
me." When trying to find a medium
to reach people and educate them
about homelessness Markham
decided on readers theatre.
"Readers theatre is very mobile
and it can be used anywhere for
many different audiences. It also
uses a variety of literature"
Markham said.
The script is completely nonac-
tion and is compiled of articles
from The Nation National Review
and Newsweek. Also incorporated
into the presentation is the
popular song by Phil Collins
"Another Day in Paradise." The
presentation is approximately 20
minutes in length and the cast and
director will entertain questions
following the chapel performance
vlay3.
There is a growing concern for
those who are homeless. "This
problem effects everything-
school future generations and
each one of us financially if in no
other way. When we become aware
of a problem we will be more likely
to recognize it and do something
about it" Markham said "it is
easy to be callous to the problem
of the homeless" Markham con-
tinued "but we must realize that
these are real people and real pro-
blems that go beyond the
stereotypical vagrant to families
and people like ourselves."
Denise Box cast member in the
production encourages all HSU
students to attend the chapel per-
formance. "The presentation
shows many viewpoints and will
open your eyes to the reality of
homelessness. The script leaves
you thinking and perhaps with a
better understanding of what our
response to this problem should
be."
Indeed the script does not simp-
ly show the reality of
homelessness but what we as in-
dividuals can do about this pro-
blem. There is a national program
in name but it is not well-
established. Major cities offer
limited help to the homeless but
there is no national effort to
distribute food money clothing
and job opportunities. There is a
tentative arrangement with First
Baptist Church Abilene and the
Abilene Department of Social Ser-
vices. The readers theatre medium is x
very successful as well as mobile.

FRESHMEN HOST ACTIVITY
ABI-School Scavenger Hunt Planned to
Raise Money for Summer Missionaries

An All-School Scavenger Hunt
sponsored by the BSU Freshman
Council is planned for Saturday
May 5 at 7 p.m. Teams of five or
less will be competing for
monetary prizes.
Each participating team will pay
a small entry fee. From the money
collected 25 percent will be the
1st 2nd and 3rd prizes and 75 per-
cent will go to support summer
missions.
The hunt will take place all over
Abilene so a car will be needed.
Teams will also need a polaroid
camera. Tiffany Milmo chairman
of the social committee of
Freshman Council said the
scavenger hunt is a "stress release
activity and a time of fun and
fellowship before finals."
Posterboards for entries will be
on the BSU door in Moody Centei.
Teams should sign up by Friday.
