Music Reviews
The Seventy Sevens: Sticks and Stones
Reviewed by Duane Simolke
This isn't just an exercise in allitera-
tion. It's the return of one of the most out-
standing and innovative bands of the eight-
ies. This is a collection of unreleased
material from their first decade. The CD
has four bonus songs alternate versions of
songs from their third album bringing the
CD's total running time to 73 minutes!
Chris Hillman of the Byrds appears on
one of the bonus songs "The Lust the
Flesh the Eyes and the Pride of Life" a
77 's classic about a man who keeps think-
ing the next thing he gets will satisfy him.
Nothing he gets offers more than tempo-
rary satisfaction but everybody wants to
be like him.
The lyrics are generally indirect rely-
ing on symbolism catchy phrases and
everyday situations to communicate a
Christian message. The result is original
thought provoking lyrics. The point might
not always come across but listeners are
left with something to contemplate.
"MT" is about obsession. "Perfect
Blues" satarizes attempts to find perfect
people. "God Sends Quails" evokes Old
Testament images to remind us "You can't
go backyou can go on." And here's a
great hook: "You can't have love without
dreamsand you've got to have some
dreams this side of paradise."
There are many other alternative
bands around but this one incorporates
blues and rockabilly. The 77 's like to jam
in the studio so don't expect the songs to
fade too quickly.

Real World Is Scary
by Rick Hope
Here I stand at the threshold of my
last year at this prestigious university.
Ever since I came here as a transfer student
at the Fall of '89 1 have greatly enjoyed
my friendships and experiences. Now I
find myself looking at a chapter of my life
about to close. How do I feel?
Scared to death.
Actually the feeling I have on leaving
college is about the same feeling I had on
entering: a feeling of adventurousness
mixed with a feeling of panic. Sure I'm
ready to take on the real world but can I
handle it?
Surely I'm not the only graduating
senior experiencing that feeling. Surely I
have other peers who would agree with
me. After all if HSU did such a good job -in
getting us ready for college how much
more of a job can they do in preparing us
for the real world?
This was a question asked to Dr. Paula
Windham recently by the members of an
Oral Argumentation class taught by Dr.
Mary Evelyn Collins. The class even
asked her about the possibility of a work-
shop which would prepare seniors for life
after graduation. Dr. Windham felt that the
class had an excellent idea but said it
would be important for this idea to be tak-
en through the proper channels and more
importantly to know the student popula-
tion's reaction to such an idea.
So what is your reaction? Would you
sign up for such a course? Call Dr. Collins
in the communications department or write
a letter to your friendly editor at The
Brand. The workshop could be reality if
the students are heard.
