By Steve Zimmer
Summer may be fast ap-
proaching but the ongoing pro-
cess of higher education will
be in full preparation in the
coming months for the large
influx of new students in the
fall.
Orientation will have some
noticeable changes from past
years. Primarily there will be
a significant increase in activi-
ties for incoming non-traditional
students. In the past
there was one meeting sched-
uled for non-traditional stu-
dents at which time pertinent

issues were addressed and dis-
cussed. This year however
non-traditional students will
have a variety of activities
scheduled throughout the full
orientation period.
The schedule this year has
been consolidated as there is
one less day to work with. The
process will begin on Saturday
August '21 and end on Mon-
day August 23. It will have the
themeof"LearningtheRopes."
This theme is strongly reflected
in four scheduled seminars cov-
ering the topics ofTimeMoney
Management Stress Manage-
ment AcademicBusiness Af-
fairs and Roommate Negotia-
tionProblem Solving.
A church fair has been
added in place of the former
church reception. According to
Tammy Thomas Student Di-
rector of Orientation the fair
will contain carnival-style
events kand will have a more
casual atmosphere than the
church reception.
Several items from the three
day schedule have been syn-
thesized with the non-traditional
student in mind. This
includes events with traditional
students such as the Time Man-
agement Stress Management
andAcademicBusinessAffairs
seminars and strictly non-traditional
functions such as a cook
out-pool party and a non-traditional
reception held by Alpha
Epsilon Omega (AEO) a cam-
pus organization comprised of
non-traditional students but
who's membership is open to
any student that feels the need
to belong and has not found a
group that is right for them.
Tammy Thomas feels that
preparations have been going
smoothly especially consider-
ing the magnitude of the event.
Incoming students are being or-
ganized into 27 families num-
bering about IS students each.
There are two group leaders
who are trained and assigned to
each family.
Furthermore there are sev-
eral orientation committees. A
Registration Committee is
headed by Robyn Eads. The
RecreationGames Committee
is headed by Karmen
Kurykendal the Banquet Com-
mittee is led by Cindy Vasquez
the Church Committee is led
by Mechelle Donaldson a Get
to Know Abilene Committee is
headed by Emily Hager and
Stacy Vaughn the Decorations
Committee is headed by Kevin
Martin and Bryan Adams over-
sees the Beanie Capping.
All of this is pulled together
by the leadership of Thomas
and Linda Carleton Dean of
Students and Student Develop-
ment. They and two commit-
tee members attended a Na-
tional Orientation Directors As-
sociation meeting at Oklahoma
University. At the meeting
many plans were drawn up for
the fall orientation with a few
surprises.
"Many schools were inter-
ested in our orientation. This
made us feel really positive
about what we have." Thomas
stated.
Currently committees are
finalizing their individual re-
ports so that they can wrap
everything up on the 27th and
28th of this month setting the
ball in motion.
Incoming students can ex-
pectpersonal contact before the
fall. As students register group
leaders will receive names and
will follow up with a special
phone call over the summer.
Then the fall orientation will
be finalized ushering in a new
class to the "Forty Acres."
