Former President.
Former students of Simmons
university in their annual gath-
ering on the eve of the school's
commencement program review-
ed memorable events of college
days in a spirited program held
in connection with a banquet
honoring 1931 graduates.
Approximately 185 one of the
largest crowds ever to assemble
for a Simmons alumni banquet
attended the affair at the Hilton
hotel.
Election held at the conclusion
of the program resulted in the
naming of Will Henry Haney of
Abilene president succeeding the
Rev. Sam Morris of Stamford
and these other officers:

Wichita Falls second vice-president;
Gcnelle Jennings Abilene
secretary; Claudine Olsen Abi-
lent treasurer and Raymond Foy
Dallas publicity manager.
Ben Allen member of the class
of 1012 was master of ceremo-
nies. 0. S. Burkett representing
classes of before 1900 recounted
Simmons early days. Bert Lowe
C. C. Cowden and R.. S. Walker
representing 1900-1910 classes
gave a take-on on me nays oi
military training in the school.
Classes of 1911 to 1916 were rep-
resented by Mrs. H. A. Pender
and Mrs. Beulah Burkett Howard
the latter singing her own com-
position honoring Simmons "Pur-
ple and Gold."
Service for "Dammit"
Group singing of war songs
led by W. T. Walton featured the
part of classes of 1917-1922. The
representation also represented
the burial service for "Dammit"
famed bulldog mascot of the
school which died in 1921 and

Etta Fleming Harwell and Mrs.
Nelson Hutto.
Tribute to the work for Sim-
mons of President J. D. Sandefer1
Dr. 0. H. Cooper and Dean Julius
Ulsen was paia in a skcicii pre-
sented by classes of '29-'30. Jim
Williams portrayed "Proxy" San-
defer Howard -Davidson Dr.
Cooper and Otho Polk Dean Ol-
sen. President Sandefer made a brief
talk at the close of the program.
Musical numbers on the pro-
gram included selections by a
quartet composed of W. J. Work
Harold Moore Edgar Ingcrson
and Euell Porter and selections
on the vibraharp by Mrs. J. C.
Burkett Jr. The program closed
with the singing of the Simmons
anthem.

Johnny Lovell Called
Before Grand Jury
A summons by the grand jury
was the official aftermath of J.
A. Lovell's sermon preached
against the bootlegging and liquor
purchases which he revealed at a
meeting of his church several
weeks ago.
Johnny said he hoped and be-
lieved that the grand jury would
help him in his crusade against
the liquor traffic.
"Just as soon as I go in that
room" ho said "I am going to
preach a sermon. I hav: two texts.
If 1 find the grand jury is sym-
pathetic and wants to help me
stamp out bootlegging in Abilene

ago in Paris of Norwegian par-
entage and began the study of the
violin at the age of five
in study at the Paris Conserva-
toire with such masters as Tin-
baud where he was graduated in

pold Auer for four years during
which time he also served as as-
sistant to the great master teacher
of violin.
Praised by Teachers
Writing of Thaulow in 1916
Auer said: "The young Thau-
low who studies with me now will

said: "Thaulow is an eminently

I find that the grand jury is not
friendly to me I am going to
preach from Proverbs sixth chap-
ter and seventh verse: 'Be yc
wise as serpents and harmless as
doves.' "
Whether the sermon was
preached or not can not be made
public however he came from
the jury room smiling as he had
before entering when he' patted
his Bible lovingly and said: "This

Bible head is ready to take over
field work in West Texas and
New Mexico but will not teach
classes until the fall quarter.
Prof. W. A. Stephenson govern-
ment teacher is returning from
Texas university where he has
been working toward his Ph.D.
degree.
Special Coursea
Thirty-five members of the reg-
ular faculty most of them heads
of departments are being retain-
ed during the summer.
A coaching school for high
' school coaches' is to be conducted
by Coach Leslie Cranfill
Art courses specially designed
for children up to 18 years of age
are to be offered under the direc-
tion of Miss A. M. Carpenter di-
rector of the school of fine and
applied art. Registration in this
junior school will be held Satur-
day and Monday afternoon from
2 to 4 o'clock at the fine arts
building.
Elementary intermediate ju-
nor high and high school art
will be included in these courses.
This special work is being of-
fered in addition to regular full
-courses in all phases of art and

each class and then the Brand
staff picked four at large. The
twenty pictures were sent to Hol-
