Next Grid Battle Carries Cowmen To El Paso
Last Score May
Cause Overrating
Of Simmons Team
THIS IS YOUR TEAM SIMMONS
Sanity of Forecast Depends
On What Takes Place
This Evening
Simmons Cowhand grldders next
Friday will journey westward for
their annual tilt with the School of
Mines eleven at El Paso. Last year
tho Ranchers smothered a crack bunch
of Prospectors under a 45-0 score but
this very fact will probably prove a
bad thing for this year's club ;
Crippled by injuries sustained in
tho two games to date and with each
scrimmage calling for a doctor's bill
last season's outcome may cnuso the
Ranchers to bo over rated for tho
fray. Moguls of the club wcro shiv-
vering a tho time drew near for tho
tilt with tho Saints for fear that it
might also grab another ball totter
from tho fast diminishing ranks. -
Littlo is known at present concern-
ing tho pcrsoncl of the Mines club
but it .is known that producing fight-
ing footballers is a habit with Max
Saxon head mentor at tho El Paso
institution and tho game with Sim-
mons is their big affair of tho year.
Much of the sensible prc-gamo dop-
ing will depend on the outcome of the
game trjls evening.

Although tho Saints appear har
in lino for a place as a conference
contender after severe drubbings by
Loyola and Baylor both times by tho
one-sided count 32 to 0 they are re-
garded as dangerous by the Cowboys
who unexpectedly took it on tho chin
more than once last year in games
that had tho same impending em
marks
Simmons Record 50-50
Simmons is standing ajt tho half
and half mark in its pre-conferenco
skirmishing. In the season opener
with Canyon Buffalos Coach Les
Cranfill's aspirants came with a G
to 0 victory after covering a punt on
the Teachers' 10-yard line. Last week
Jefferson university's Rangers took
Simmons for a 20 to 0 ride but duo to
the fact that tho Professionals have
been smashing with every college club
they play probably so much emphasis
should not bo placed on this score.
Th Cowhands 1931 victory over tho
Saints was tho first sinco 1920. The
teams battled to a scoreless tino in
1930. In 1029 it was a 13 to 0 vic-
tory for the Saints and a still moro
devistating ono in 1928 20 to 0 then
another 0 to 0 tin back in 1927.
Three Regulars Out
Tho injury jinx that has been pur-
suing principally tho Cowhand back-
field men all season still asserts itself
with enough forco to three regular
out of the play some probably for tho
remainder of tho year. Lo Vurlo An-
drus and Deedio Thompson halves
and Clinton Murphy quarter respec
tlvely sprained an ankle a broken
arm and smashed cheek bone.
Nubbin Byron ono year letterman
at quarter is expected to bo back on
the firing line. Will Edwin Routh
1931 freshman in case of emergency
will do relief work. Ho has already
seven quarters to his credit in two
games. Puny Wranosky husky tack-
le who did not make the trip to Jef-
ferson U. becauso of a bad ankle is
in condition and will bo ready for
duty against the Saints. His casual-
ty accounts for tho fifth Cowhand In-
jury in as many games and practice
sessions.
Aerial Show Expected
Presence of a clicking aerial attack
and an abovo the average punting do
fenco has been outstanding in St. Eds.
games this year. Ktvltn a haifbacK
is said to bo proficient and is duo to
bo tho lad tho Cowhands aro going
to have to watch in both departments.
It was his engineering that brought
the Saints into Baylor territory a few
times last Saturday
Tho Cowboys also aro supposed to
excel in this atmospherical depart-

Cordueroy
Simmons Cowgirls this evening will
march across the grid iron in a new
uniform entirely different from any
worn by this group before. All of
tho new uttire has arrived with the
exception of tho boots which will be
of tho riding variety cut down slight-
ly in length. The factory has notifi-
ed moguls that tho boots will be ship-
ped within tho next few days.
The skirts will be of purple cordu
roy and cut on an entirely new pat-
tern. Shirts will be of gold satin. A
purple tie and the customary five gal
Ion hat's will complete the ensemble.
Gold Footballs Sweaters and
Blankets Will Go
To Lettermen
Gold footballs sweeters and blan-
kets are on the way for 19 members
of the Cowboy 1931 grid club after
a wait of almost nine months before
an order was sent in for tho regula-
tion laurels due last year's squad.
Sweaters awarded only to men let-
tering for tho first time will go to:
Guy Crcighton and Eugene McCollum
half s j W. I. Byron and Clinton Mur-
phy quarterbacks; G. L. Huetis and
Jim Necly ends; Waymon Koonce
tnckle: and Carr Sprabcrry W. J.
Wranosky and J. B. Ncely guards.
Second year lettermen will receive
good footballs. The list includes Ken-
neth Bently guard and Leo Vurlo
Andrus and Carl Pec halfs. "Chig"
Burnam who has been student man-
ager of the squad for two years will
also receive the award.
Blankets will go to five three year
lettermen. They are: Harold Fitz-
gerald tackle Curtis "Stump" Ham-
ilton guard Stevo Marshall full Ver-
non Stafford end; and George Go-
lightly center.

ment. Tho aerial game thus far has
been slow in clicking. With Pee and
Byron both reliable tosscrs in the
game for onco Cranfill's eleven may
have a good opportunity to test their
passing prowess.
Both Teams Light
Coach Al Sarafiny has tho lightest
squad beyond doubt in tho Texas con-
ference this year. Tho forward wall
averages around 170 pounds the
smallest line to represent St. Eds in
a decade. The invaders boast one
nifty little guard "Hack" Luck who
tips the balanco at 145. Tho second-
ary weighs in as 10 pounds less per
man than the forwards to averago 1C0
pounds.
Tho Simmons line with a six pound
advantago per man is still considered
an unusual light outfit in comparison
with nveracre conference clubs. The
backfield Weighs in nround 170 a 10
pound net advantage over tho more
puny Saints.
Whether tho loss of Golightly and
Hamilton all-conforence conter and
tacklo respectively of last year will
force an Involuntary let-down In the
1932 lino's prowess yet remains to be
seen. Otherwise tho same forward
as last year will occupy tho heavy
duty berths. Lloyd Copo is carrying
tho pivot load while Pinky Koonce
Puny Wranosky and J. B. Neely aro
alternating at tho Hamilton vacancy.
Jako Bcntley and Spraberry are a
couple of letcr guards. Frosh squad
graduates Bill Ramsey Ivan Flynn
Iko Ardis Frank Junell and Leo Var-
ner nro duo to como in for reserve
aorvico and continue making it a
tough tussle for regulars to hold their
positions.
Probable starting lineup Simmons
university: left end Hoostis; left
tackle Fitzgerald (c); left guard J.
B. Ncely; center Cope; right guard
Bcntley; right tackle Koonce; right
end Winters; quarterback Routh;
left half Crcighton; right half Mc-
Collum; fullback Pee. -
St. Eds: left end McLaughlin; left
tackle Stanford; left guard Mus
grove; center Shaw; right guard
Quebedeaux; right tackle Guynes
right end Cohen; quarter Donohue;
left half Kivlin; right half Evans;
full Stone.
