However Coach Woodson's fresh-

come by beating the West Texas
frosh 33-22 and the Tech Picadors
33-24.
Bob Steele high-s'corcr for the
Cowhands this season added nine
points to his record ugainst the Buf-
faloes and ten against Tech.
In other Border conference games

Jack Curtice Takes
Athletic Reins At
Texas Mines
EL PASO Feb. 13. Less than two
weeks ago the Wee Wizard of the
Border Conference officially unpack-
ed his worn black bag and started
taking out his athletic paraphernalia
and already his magic is revolution-
izing the Texas Mines athletic pro-
gram nnd conjuring up startling re-
sults. Athletic Director Jack Curtice
whose coaching motto Is that "good
athletes are good scholars first"
rolled up his sleeves on arrival and
pulled out of the black bag a 12-
month physical education program.
Anxious to avoid delays the youth-
ful mentor immediately issued a four-
word grid communique on assuming
his duties. "Stop delayed action now"
ho ordered. Curtice personally saw
that prospective athletes registered
for certain physical cd classes. On
his return from an athletic recruit-
ing trip February 13 he will take
personal charge of the classes to
"turn post-season fat into prc-scason
muscle" by strenuous gymnastics.
The 30-day spring football practice
approved by the Border Conference
gets under way following completion
of basketball season. Spring train-
ing will deal only in fundamental
steps stressing blocking nnd tackling.
The 34-year-old coach is determined
to spin the "whirlwindest" eleven
over seen in the Southwest out of the
Mucker dressing rooms next fall but
believes that if players grasp the
basic principles in March the Intri-
cate details will be relatively simple.
All work on the field omitting
skull practice is another step the
bow-tio wearing mentor has ordered
for spring practice. "Experience
through practice" said Curtice "is
the only method to follow."
And to prove that tho Wee Wiz-
ard's ideas are paying dividends
seven Texas high school athletes
showed up for spring registration
while several others arc expected to
be on his list when he returns from
the present trip.

With basketball season well over
.half gone those amazing West Texas
State Buffaloes are still at tho top
of Border conference standings with
no serious challenge facing them.
Even though this column is being
written before tho Tech Raiders mce
the Buffaloes this week wo believe
that it is safe to make the above
statement.
With nil modesty we admit with-
out question that there Is not the
slightest trace of n sports dopester
in this department. However any
Sunday morning "quarterback" can
see that there are no teams in the
cactus loop this season that can
conscientiously declare themselves
worth-while opposition for Al Bag-
gett's Buffs.
Black figures on white paper show
that tho West Texans rank among
the leading basketcers of tho nation.
The mere two defeats they have met
can bo disregarded when you check
comparative scores against mutual
opponents of the Buffs and their victors.
But to look forward to seasons to
come thero may be a different story.
The H-SU freshman team traveled up
to the Panhandle last week with the
regulars and licked the West Texas
Frogs ns well as the Texas Tech
Picadors.
Probably none of these freshmen
will be called for military service
soon therefore we can nil look for-
ward to the bright days ahead.
In Intramural basketball the Boot-
leggers are now leading tho fast
league with the Sure Shots and the
Married Preachers tied for "first in
the slow group.
The Hep-Kats early season favor-
ites were nosed out last week by the
Bootleggers who came out of the
slow league after final exams.
The Bootleggers marked up two of
their victories in tho slow league
against easy opposition but they've
proved that they rate the toughest
opposition the Intramural program
can offer.
Since tho Sure Shots downed the
Married Preachers early this week
44-20 it is safe to predict them to
take top honors in the lower bracket.

2 Games Scheduled
For Today

seven field goals and ono free toss
for a total of 15 points. Murray
Evans took top honors for the losers
with 10 points to his credit.
Two games were reeled off Tues-
day with the Sure Shots defeating
tho Married Preachers 45 to 26 and
tho Red Hots ckcing out over the
Rucky Broncos 30 to 26
Tommy Teal of tho Sure Shots too

game by totaling 17 points. He was
closely followed by McKinnon who

In the second game Tuesday John-
son made 17 points to lead the Red
Hots with Nell leading the Rucky

back in the race for the champion-
ship. Tommy Hill racked up a total
number of 24 points to lead both
teams in scoring. Tolllo McKown
was high for the Play Boys with 14.
Two bouts are scheduled for this
nfternoon. At 2:30 the Play Boys
will meet tho Red Hots and an hour
later the Hep-Kats meet the Boot-
leggers. A new schedule will appear in the
