BUNTING INSTRUCTION — Manager Calvin Workman, right, shows Carroll
Samuels, left, and D. V. Edwards the proper way to bunt. They are on the Nation-
al League All-Star team. (News Staff Photo)
. The Indians scalped the Tigers
and the White Sox -rallied to
defeat the Giants in Friday
night’s action at Little League
Field.
INDIANS 18, TIGERS 5
The Indians were blanked for
the first three innings, but erupt-
ed for 10 fourth-inning runs and
added eight runs in the fifth
to deal the Tigers their third
straight loss and knock them
out of contention for the league
crown. They finished the season
with a 6-4 record.
The win was the second of
the season for the Indians and
deadlocked them for the cellar
with the Red Sox. Each team
has a single postponed game
left.
The Tigers scored single runs
in the first and third, and went
into the fourth with a 2-0
lead. Wayne Cooper, Indian
pitcher, opened the fourth with
a single, Johnny Morrison dou-
bled him home and scored on
Joe Wall’s single, then the rout
was on. By the time Jimmy
Rhymes got the carnage stop-
ped, 10 runs were across on
four hits and eight walks.
The Tigers failed to score in
the fourth and the Indians took
up the warpath again in the
fifth as Wayne Cooper’s three-
run homer and four singles,
along with three bases on balls,
added to eight runs. The Tigers
added three in the bottom of the I
fifth, but the game ended be-
cause of the 10-run rule.
Chris Mitchell was the losing
pitcher and Cooper got credit
for the win.
WHITE SOX 9, GIANTS 8
The Giants made a gallant
effort but finally dropped the
decision in the bottom of the
last inning. Trailing by four
runs in the top of the frame,
the Giants put on a six-run rally
to pull ahead jj>y two runs but
the Sox responded with three
in the bottom of the inning to
cop the victory.
The Giants got only three hits,
two of them by Larry Handlin,
off the combined hurling of
Beauchamp and Pearson, but
used the 10 walks awarded them
to good advantage as they built
up their score.
Larry Handlin allowed 13 safe
blows to the pale hose, but some
unsure fielding hurt him in
the clutch as he stranded nine
runners.
The White Sox win moved
them one and one-half games
ahead of the pack, but the Yan-
kees have two games remain-
ing. They could deadlock the
title by winning both games,
since one is with the Sox. Dajils
have not been set for these
games.
Randy Pearson and David
Belding had perfect nights at
the plate and led the White Sox
batters. Danny Choate chipped
in with two timely hits, but it
remained for Gary Smith to
drive in the winning -run with
a last-inning s..ingle.
Eight of the players who saw
action in this encounter will rep-
resent the Continental League
when they square off against
the National League in tonight’s
(Monday) game at 6:30 in Little
League Park.
The Giants scrambled the
league race with a win over
the Tigers and the White Sox
