New Name
For Frosh
Dennie Richardson junior from
Kilgore submitted the prize-winning
name "Yearling" in the
"Name the Buttons" contest held
during Homecoming according to
Danny Yeary Cleburne student
body president.
Richardson's suggestion ended
a fifteen-year old nickname given
to the freshman football team by
an H-SU sports writer. The
term "buttons" refers to the little
knobs which appear on a calf's
head before he sprouts horns.

cil. Land a junior student from
Goree is majoring in biology. He
has been a member of S. E. A.
for the past two years. He is a
member of the Pershing Rifles
and officers club. He was on the
honor roll last year during both
fall and spring semesters. At pres-
ent he is working as a student
lab assistant in botany and

On Social Studies
Headed By Bowden
Hardin - Simmons University
will host the annual Conference
on Social Studies and Business
Education for high school and
elementary social science teachers
and all interested students next
Friday Nov. 11.
Meetings will be held at the
University Baptist Church
because of the limited facilities
at H-SU due to construction of
the chapel auditorium.
Dr. E. L. Bowden head of the
Education Department at H-SU
is general chairman of the con-
ference and will set the tone of
the meeting during the first gen-
eral session Friday morning. Mrs.
Mary Courtney former assistant
superintendent of Chicago schools
will 'be the featured speaker at
both morning and afternoon ses-
sions. Theme of the conference is

Teachers from Abilene Odessa
Dallas San Angelo and Lubbock
will direct sectional meetings for
.teachers of various age groups
and subjects. x
Invitations to the conference
were sent to all teachers at
schools within a 100-mile radius
of Abilene. The meeting is open
to anv social science teacher in
terested in the problem of world
understanding. The $2 registra-
tion fee will include the noon
meal.
Mr. Bowden issued a special in-
vitation to Hardin-Simmons Mc-
Murry and Abilene Christian Col-
lege students. College students
will not be required to pay the
registration fee.

Sgt. Maj. A. L. Mosley E9 was
hoonred on his retirement from
the Army after 26 years of ser-
vice by the Hardih-Simmons
ROTC brigade Monday.
Capt. Ralph H. Smith assistant
professor of military science read
a citation from the army chief of
staff honoring Sgt. Maj. Mosley.
Mosley entered the army in
1934 at Ft. Sill Okla. and served
in World War H andthe Korean
conflict.
The sergeant major served with
the 79th Infantry in Europe in
1944 where he was awarded three

Hardin-Simmons was represent-
ed by ten faculty members at the
Baptist General Convention of
Texas which began Monday
evening Oct. 31 and will continue
through Nov. 3 at Lubbock.
Attending the convention were
President Evan A. Reiff Univer-
sity president; Truett Latimer di-
rector of alumni affairs; W. T.
Walton vice-president and dean
of student affairs; Lee Hemphill
vice-president in charge of de-
velopment; Byron Bryant direc-
tor of division of public relations
and George Graham executive
assistant to the president.
Others were Dr. Ray Ellis pro-
fessor in Bible; W. O. Beazley
director of religious education and
Dr. Lindell O. Harris chairman
of the Bible department.
YWA's to Hold
Annual Banquet
The annual Young Women's As-
sociation banquet will be held
Saturday Nov. 12 8 p. m. at
Lavender's according to Gail
Eggleston sophomore from St.
Louis Mo. social chairman.
"Deep Purple" is the theme of
the banquet which will feature
decorations and music to corres-
pond with the theme. Speaker
and other participants on the pro-
gram have not been announced
yet.
Tickets may be purchased from
any member of the ticket com-
mittee for $1.60. Carol Griner
freshman from Belen N. M. is
head of the ticket committee.
All YWA's and their dates are
invited to attend.
Brigade
battle stars the Bronze Star for
valor the Purple Heart and the
Combat Infantryman's Badge.
He came to Hardin-Simmons in
July of 1952 when the ROTC
department was started.
At the time of Mosley's retire-
ment he held the rank of E9 the
highest rank a non-commissioned
officer can hold. The E9 is a
super-grade established by the
army two years ago few men have
achieved it.
Mosley will remain with the
University as military property
custodian and warehouse supply
manager.
