Founders Day honors
H-SU class of 1921
Founder's Day held April 9
honored members of the Class of
1921 in a special assembly and
traditional memorial ceremony.
Sponsored by the Alumni As-
sociation the assembly was held
at 10 a.m. in Behrens Chapel.
The traditional ceremony at the
memorial quadrangle and lun-
cheon in the Moody Center to
honor the 1921 graduates follow-
ed the program.
Included in the assembly was
the presentation of the bronze
University medallion to the hon-
orees. The medallions have been
awarded each year to the gradu-
ates of the class of fifty years
ago since its authorization by the
trustees and initiation during
the 75th Anniversary observan-
ces. Presiding over the assembly

recital joint
Sophomores Judith Smith and
John Golightly of H-SU will pre-
sent a joint recital at 7:30 p.m.
tonight in Caldwell Hall.
Miss Smith soprano will be
accompanied by Debbie Dunlap.
The program will include
"Chevaux de Bois" by Claude
Debussy "Parmi les pleurs" by
Giacomo Meyerbeer "Jimmie's
Personel has
annual BBQ
Gary Luskey in conjunction
with Luskey's Western Store
will sponsor a faculty and staff
barbecue tonight at 6:30 in Rose
Field House.
There is no charge for the
barbecue. Faculty staff and
families are invited to attend.

of the Alumni Association Mem-
bers of Students Promoting Uni-
versity Relations (Spurs) and
other students introduced the
special guests which included
several former medallion reci-
pients. W. H. Jackson Sr. of the class
of 1921 gave the invocation and
Dr. W. B. Irvin a former trus-
tee gave the response from the
class.
At the memorial quadrangle
ceremonies class officers read
tributes to those who are buried
there and placed flowers on the
graves. Jane Hix student body
president presided.
Each graduate of the class of
1921 who attended the ceremon-
ies received one of the medallions.

AIM FIRE ! The squad of riflemen fired a twenty - one rifle salute to the founders of
Hardin-Simmons buried in the triangle in front of Moody Center on Founders' Day. The
firers are members of Pershing Rifles Company L-17.

ants from several colleges are
expected to compete in the rodeo
events.
Top rodeo teams of the nation
are expected to attend includ-
ing Texas Tech Tarleton Sul
Ross South Plains and Eastern
New Mexico University among
others. The rodeo is approved
by the National Intercollegiate
Rodeo Association (NIRA) and
counts toward NIRA honors for
top cowboys and cowgirls at
the end of the year.
Events in the rodeo will be
barbeback bronc riding saddle
bronc riding calf roping steer
wrestling and the thriller of
them all bull riding.
Cowgirls will compete in bar-
rel racing and ribbon roping.
Both cowboys and cowgirls will
be testing their skill against the
strength and contrariness of the
stock.
During intermissions of each
performance Hardin - Simmons
students will take part in goat-
sacking contests. The object is
for a couple to run with a burlap
sack from one end of the arena
to another where several goats
are tied.
There the girl holds open the
sack while the boy puts the
goat in usually head first. The
first couple to get their sacked
goat back across the starting line
wins.
After the goat-sacking the
specialty performance will be-
gin. Performing will be rodeo
clown Roger Mawson and the
Taylor County Sheriff's Posse.
Performances of the rodeo
will be nightly Thursday Fri-
day and Saturday beginning at
8. There will be a Saturday
matinee performance at 2 p.m.
Tickets for the show are
available at the Admissions Of-
fice in Sandefer Memorial at
the desk in Moody Center and
at several Abilene businesses.
Furnishing the stock for the
show is Walt Alsbaugh of Ala-
mosa Colo. Junior Meeks of
Anson is to be the rodeo clown
during the bull riding events.
Announcing the rodeo will be
Dr. Charles (Bud) Townsend a
former history professor here.
V All three of these men have
worked with several consecutive
H-SU rodeos.
Judges of rodeo events will be
Brandon McReynolds of An-
drews and Billy Weeks of Abi-
lene. The Rodeo Club is also work-
ing on various committees to
aid the rodeo preparation and
operation. Among their activi-
ties will be working chutes tak-
ing care of the barns selling
programs helping with the
barbecue selling ticket hospi-
tality publicity and cleaning up
the stands between perform

The first H-SU Intercollegiate
Rodeo was held April 18-19
1947 planned by the late Carl
Myers and E. W. Bill Ledbetter.
In 1949 Myers was accidentally
shot at a Big Spring rodeo and
in 1950 the H-SU Rodeo Arena
was named in his memory. The
Rodeo programs this year will
recognize the Myers family.
Carl Myers' mother Mrs.
Reagan Myers of Dallas expects
to attend the Saturday perform-
ance of the Rodeo. His sister
Mrs. Jesse Lawson is the wife of
Frank Lawson H-SU assistant
vice president for development.
Mr. and Mrs. Lawson and their
two children Frankie and E. F.
plan to be at H-SU Friday and
Saturday.
