Whitis sees 12 'possible starters'
Coach Glen Whitis took a
careful inventory after registra-
tion this past week counted 12
varsity basketball players and
labeled each and every one of
them a "possible starter."
The squad is composed of five
regulars from last season two
sophomores who were redshirt-
ed last season two top-notch
sophomores up from the JV
team and three promising jun-
ior college transfers.
"They look great" Whitis de-
clared after a meeting Thursday.
"We are eager to see just which
players will win out in several
battles for starting positions."
Whitis who is beginning his
second year at H-SU after a sen-
sational career at Howard Payne
can't begin coaching until Oct.
15 although conditioning drills
will start earlier.
Saying he had rather forget
last year's 9-16 record and the
multitude of player injuries that
went with it Whitis summed
up his squad's potential.

He recently completed a tour
of duty in the Navy and has en-
rolled at H-SU as a freshman.
He plans to major in law en-
forcement. Larry who will be a senior
also is an outfielder. He led the
Cowboys in batting last season
with a .330 average. He hit four

ROTC adds
2 courses
Department of Military Sci-
ence has announced two new
sections of the Freshman course
101 for the fall semester. '
"These sections have been
opened for students desiring to
enter the ROTC program but
could not enroll previously be-
cause of schedule conflicts"
Capt. Bates public Information
director for ROTC' said.
The new sections will meet
Monday afternoons at 1 o'clock
and Thursday at 0:25 a.m. re-
spectively he said. "
Deadline for registration) for
credit is Sept. 10.
started at least a few games last
season. MARK CARPENTER a
6-5 senior forward from Denver
could be switched from forward
to guard. Carpenter won the
"hustling Cowboy" award for his
aggressiveness last season and
is counted on as a leader.
JOHN HALL 6-8 senior from
Sterling 111. is a two-year let-
terman who started several gam-
es last season and according to
Whitis "should be pushing some-
one for a starting forward po-
sition" this season.
TOM JAHNS 6-7 forward who
suffered a knee injury after
starting all games during the
first half of the season as a
sophomore is still recorering
from surgery. "If the knee re-
covers Tom should be a great
forward" said Whitis. Jahns is
from LaPorte Ind.
STEVE LOOS 6-1 guard from
Sterling 111. started as a sopho-
more last season. The coaches
praise him as an outstanding
shooter. "His experience will
make us strong at guard"
Whitis said.
RAY WILLIAMS 6-5 senior
from Clarksdale Miss. is re-
garded as one of H-SU's all-time
greats. "Ray should have his
greatest year" Whitis declared.
"He is a fine offensive player as
well as an outstanding rebound-
er. He may be only six-five but
he can play with the six-nines."
Williams was ranked ninth in
the nation last season in field
goal shooting.
The two sophomores who had
outstanding seasons as freshmen
last year are GARY CROW-
THERS. 6-3 guard from Terre
Haute Ind. and RICKY FLOW-
ERS 6-0 guard from Clarksdale
Miss.
Whitis sees Crowthers defin-
itely battling for a starting po-
sition and calls Flowers "one
of the finest shooters on the
team.
The two who were redshirted
last season HARVEY CATCH-
INGS and STEDMAN GRA-
HAM already are well-acquainted
on the campus and are ex-
pected to make great contribu-
tions to the team.
Catchings 6-10 postman from
Jackson Miss. should become a
great sophomore by the middle
of the season Whitis says. Gra-
ham is described as a "fine de-
fensive ball player who knows
the game real well."
The new transfers all played
high school ball in Texas schools
although two of them went to
out-of-state junior colleges.
LYNEAL JAMES 6-5 junior
from Colorado City played two
years at Cisco Junior College.
He definitely could get in the
race as a starting forward Whi-
tis believes although he may be
slowed for a while until he re-
covers from a broken foot suf-
fered this summer at his home.
RON JONES 6-7 postman
from Houston played junior col-
lege ball at Merced Calif. and
is an' outstanding offensive
threat
JAMES BROWN 1969 gradu-
ate of Abilene High played for
Dick Nagy former H-SU assis-
tant at Butler County Com-
munity College in- Great Bend
Kans. before transfering to H-
SU this summer. He is 6-1 and
Whitis' scouting report indicat-
es that he is "good offensively
defensively and on the press."
