Show spirit
"Two bits four bits six bits a peso . . ." That's an expres-
sion youfll be hearing from now on that is until basketball
season is over.
Many of us have been waiting for the time when we can
really get involved in campus athletics. We're a basketball
school and we're proud of it.
Eight years ago Hardin - Simmons abandoned football to
save her whole athletic program and personally I don't be-
lieve anyone has regretted it since. While other schools are
playing football we train out basketball players in an effort
to produce a great team. This year should be one of the best
because the coaches are very enthusiastic -the players them-
selves are confident and students are afflicted with that won-
derful disease spirit.
More students than in years past seem interested in begin-
ning the season. Competition is increasing for the spirit tro-
phy as organizations and social clubs prepare to support the
team.
But something more is needed. Crowds. That's it crowds.
We need more people at the games. Last year's crowds were
atrocious. And spirit went the other direction when it came
to the game.
From all indications this year's team could be great and
should provide -thrilling victories for its fans. The players
have been working hard. Their spirit is high; they are eager
to win. But they are only part of Hardin - Simmons. They
need supporters fans that will get enthusiastic about the
game. This doesn't mean just patting them on the back. It
means attending all home games getting off your pedestal
and literally yelling your team to victory. That's right yell-
ing. .
Varsity cheerleaders are planning more pep rallies and
more techniques to use at the games. The Cowboy Band will
play at all the home games.
Get excited as you did in high school when you would go
home hoarse.
There is nothing wrong wiih il! Let yourself go. If you
think it is undignified maybe you'd better go to the first
home game and see how "undignified" our first family is.
They love the game and they show it not only by attending
but also by rooting for the team. If you really want to see
something wild watch Mrs. Skales when the game really gets
tough. She's wonderful. I've never seen anyone get so emo-
tionally involved in a game.
' To lift your spirit off the floor this year. Something new
has been added to our home court the Taylor County Coli-
seum. Purple and gold are popular colors this year and be-
cause of this the Coliseum has taken on a new decor. It now
symbolizes our home court. If you don't believe it go see for
yourself. The floor has 'H-SU Cowboys' imprinted in those
outstanding colors.
It's not far to the Coliseum. If a car is your problem surely
you can find someone in the dorm who will give you a ride.
Take a car load take a bus load take anything. The important
thing is that you go. And fans be prepared to stand. We want
everyone to show his enthusiasm. Root for your team.
"... All for the Cowboys stand up and say so." Let's hear
it for the team!

More chants pep rallies
planned by cheerleaders

Excitement is brewing among
students faculty and administra-
tors with the first home game
just around the corner. But one
group towers above all the rest
in spirit They are the cheer-
leaders those six elected stu-
dents who want mass spirit to
become a major issue on the
campus.
Td like to see us go wild this
year" says Head Cheerleader
Carey Leech who feels students
are more anxious this year than
they were last season.
To promote more interest in
the games the cheerleaders hope
to have "little" pep rallies such
as teaching yells to students
after supper in the cafeteria.
IN ADDITION they are plan-
ning more chants and move-
ments with the student body at
games in hopes of getting the
crowd to its feet

"This year we would like to
see students get involved like
standing and cheering" he said.
Both varsity and freshmen
squads themselves are getting
involved in spirit this season.
Thursday night they will teach
yells at a Sigma sponsored bon-
fire at the rodeo grounds on
Grape.
THEY HOPE there will be
more rallies of this type but
Leech feels "too often kids can't
relate to the players."
That is one reason the cheer-
leaders held a scrimmage-pep
rally prior to the Thanksgiving
holidays. Pleased with its atten-
dance he hopes more students
will join the movement.
"Once they see us play they
will want to see us play every
time" he commented and recall-
ed "Since I've been here this
will be our best year."
Leech would like to see some
clubs come up with their own
chants at the games. "I think
clubs are more receptive to the
spirit trophy" he added.
Planning to attend all the
home games and others within
budget limitations the cheer-
leaders' will add another item to
spirit this year. Tney plan to
send the team telegrams the
first to be sent to Iowa. For 25
cents any student may add his
name to the telegram.
"STUDENTS tend to forget
this is their team our school
team" he stated. "There is.no ex-
cuse for anyone to be in the
dorms when we have a home
game."
Leech hopes as many students
as possible will attend the gam-
es and help the cheerleaders root
for the team. They hope a public
address system will be avail-
able for use but that's not settled
yet
Spirit wise no matter what
the outcome of the season Bet-
sy Orr Glenda Brown Elaine
Fikes Phil Westmoreland Ben-
ji Wofford and Leech hope to be
the best cheerleaders H-SU has
had.
