Students this is your big opportunity. Today begins a
new and very agreeable system at Hardin-Simmons. If you
don't take advantage of this opportunity you have no legiti-
Today the Christian Maturity Council announced in the
Brand its aims and goals the ideas 13 people have been
working on for months. The Council has been studying
present Chapel Assembly policies while also working on
possible solutions to the problems Hardin-Simmons has
in ChapelAssembly attendance.
Students the Council has completely prepared these
items it feels should be the aims and goals of the Christian
Maturity Council at Hardin-Simmons.
Also being announced today are available student-
faculty rap sessions where everyone can express his or her
views on the present policies or suggest ways they can be
altered. These sessions will help the Council make some
suggestions relevant to what you the students want.
What could be more appropriate than to hear from the
students what their gripes are about the present system?
But there is a catch.
You yourselves either as a dorm a club or a class
must initiate and make all the plans for such sessions by
March 10 at which time there will be a feedback session in
Assembly. The Christian Maturity Council will not make
these plans for you. However members will be available to
join in the discussion if they are informed.
So students here is where we find out if you really
have opinions on Chapel policies or if you are full of hot
air. Are you going to do something about it or are you going
to let the next guy hold the session?
It's your decision. Do you want better policies? If so
let's hear from you.

True Confession: I laugh at
"All In The Family" and have
gotten so used to growing up
with Lucy on TV that I just can't
cut the cord. I run the water
while I brush my teeth. I use
Tide. And two-ply toilet paper.
Blue. With those little fleurs de
lis on them. Because they match
the motif of my bathroom.
I enjoy blazing fires in my
fireplace. The last movie I saw
was "Lady and the Tramp"
which exploits women. My bot-
tles are non-returnable and I
don't separate my garage; which
I burn in my blazing fireplace.
I just can't help it. I'm a fail-
ure at relevance.
There are however some
things about which I am rele-
vant. I don't have a snowmobile
or a sable coat. But that's about
it I read the wrong things (Nash
not Yevtushenko). I eat the
wrong things (meat not brown
rice). I enjoy the wrong theatres
(Neil Simon not Albee).
So what can I do? I am a
product of an educational system
and a bio-degradable environ-
ment that makes me feel I have
to take pleasure out of pleasure
the enjoyment out of enjoying.
The product of a guilt-ridden
culture when free-love means I
always have to say I'm sorry.
But what's so relevant about
A while ago I visited the Uni-
versity of Wisconsin campus at
Green Bay a college totally
devoted to the study of ecology.
There one student told me "It's
okay but you feel guilty doing
anything that's not relevant." I
thought the remark was ridicu-
lous. After a day there I found
myself checking the soap in the
school lav soap dishes to make
sure they were using the Right
So what is relevant? Bicycl-
ing? Good for the environment.
Cuts down on air pollution. But
I don't like bicycling. It's not
good for my psychological en-
vironment. And what is meaningful? Its
the hey-day of the academic
radical chic where everything
must have a Profound Meaning;
where anything more than a pair
of jeans and a stereo system
borders on decadence; where
back-to-earth means back-to-dearth.
Ecology racism women's lib-
eration war and the rest of the
lists are all important issues. Too
often it seems that it's not the
issues that are significant but
only the relevance of the issues.
There are things little and
big that can be enjoyed. For
their own sake. And for no other
reason. Too often the Relevance
Regalia focuses only on what's

For some people perhaps the
patterns of smog formed from a
dingy smoke stack might be
aesthetically pleasing. That
doesn't justify the polluting
smog but it creates a new and
positive viewpoint where even
the ugliness of pollution can
have its own beauty.
Truthfully I haven't resolved
my own guilt feelings about
being irrelevant. True Confes-
sion: In my city the Lucy Show
is on at the same time as the
Evening News. So I sit near the
color television receiving ra-
diation and constantly recycle
the channels back and forth
from one show to the other. Last
night Lucy talked about the
casualties in Viet Nam while
Walter Cronkite put on a Charlie
Chaplin costume and danced at
a PTA Meeting. It all evens out.
1st cases of council
The recently organized Stu-
dent Judicial Council has con-
sidered its first cases during the
last several weeks.
Each of these cases involved
students who were on chapel
probation during the 1971 Spring
semester and who failed to clear
probation by attending regular-
ly in the Fall 1971 semester.
Each case was given an indivi-
dual hearing and each student
was given an opportunity to be
present and bring witnesses or
advisors on their behalf.
The recommendations made by
the Student Judicial Council in
each of the five cases was that
the student be placed on Uni-
versity disciplinary probation.
These recommendations were
forwarded to the Dean of Stu-
dent Life who approved them
and notified the student involv-
ed of the decision.

As you're reading this week's Kaleidoscope I'll be in Aus-
tin attending the Southwestern Journalism Conference. At
this convention representatives from college newspapers
throughout the Southwest will compare and discuss similar
problems and meet in workshops to consider new ideas in
the field of college journalism.
New ideas are great but what happens to the college
newspaper when it has no staff? Don't laugh too quickly be-
cause this is the major difficulty the Brand faces this se-
mester. If you've happened to look at the masthead in the bottom
corner of the second page in each edition of the Brand you'll
notice that there is no staff listed. If this sounds weird to you
then come on up to the Brand Office any Tuesday or Thurs-
day afternoon; deadline days. The office will be desserted
except for myself the editor the business manager and a
photographer. Each week I climb the stairs of Mary Frances
hoping there'll be a new face sitting behind a typewriter
when I walk in the office. But each week I am left hoping.
What surprises me the most is that students who are
majoring and minoring in journalism have no desire to work
on the paper. Only when they have a class assignment and
are forced to write a story does iho Brand ever hear from
them. The Brand may not be a journalistic masterpiece but
it is the best experience they will ever receive in writing
The Brand has had many critics in the past year. There
have been many of you who have suggested to us what the
paper needs more of and there are many of you who have
considered it a "terrible" newspaper. To those people we
have extended an invitation to join the staff and put their
ideas to work. But oddly enough we've never seen hide nor
hair of these people since then. Putting your money where
your mouth is seems to be a very hard thing to do.
So each deadline it's the same story not enough copy.
Our problem is not that there is not enough news but that
three people can only handle so much.
On other college campuses throughout the U.S. the college
newspaper is the voice of the students and one of the most
influential bodies on campus. If you don't believe me come
up to ihe Brand Office and look at some of the papers put
out by other schools. The reason why ihe Brand looks third
rate next to them is because of the lack of people willing to
So if you've been wanting to see a record review appear in
the paper or if you have ideas for feature stories write
them and bring them up to the office. We'll welcome them
and you too with open arms.
Without a staff of workers willing to give up a few hours
on Thursday afternoons the Brand will continue to be full of
stories about people you've never heard of and announce-
ments for meetings you'll never attend.
But even worse without a staff of writers the future of
the Brand seems very grim. In fact someday there might
be a Hardin-Simmons University without the Brand. I'd hate
to see that day arrive.
So the next time you start to criticize the Brand think
about what you've contributed to it lately. If the answer is
nothing then get busy. Try it you'll like it!
