Composers
by faculties of 3 colleges
The Abilene Composers Con
cert presenting music written
by composers who are members
of the facilities of the three Abi-
lene colleges will be given at 8
p.m. Saturday at Behrens Chapel
Auditorium.
Music will be performed by
the H-SU Concert Choir the
Abilene Christian College A
Capella Chorus the Abilene and
Cooper High Combined Choir
and two soloists Phillip H. Lowe
senior from San Antonio and
Richard A. Plier assistant pro-
fessor in strings and literature.
Composers whose music will
be played are Dr. M. L. Daniels
Dr. Andy J. Patterson Dr. T.
W. Dean Dr. James D. Cram Dr.
Jack Boyd and Dr. Macon D.
Sumerlin.
Dr. Dean head of the School
of Music was second place win-
ner in the Texas' Federated Mu-
sic Clubs for works with chorus
and-orchestra. He also received
a special award for the oratorio
"Behold the Glory of the Lamb."
Dr. Dean attended H-SU East-
man School of Music and the
University t)f Southern Califor-
nia. He taught at Southwestern
Seminary for 11 years and has
taught at H-SU for 20 years.
Dr. Patterson professor of
theory and composition won
first prize at the University of
Texas. Contemporary Festival
and first prize at the Texas Com-
posers Guild Contest. Composit-
ions by Dr. Patterson that have
recently heen performed include
"For I Am Thy-God" "Sonata
No. 2 for Horn and Piano"
"Trumpet Sonata" and "Flute
Sonata."
Dr. Cram head of the depart-
ment of applied music has re-
cently had two of his composit-
ions performed. They are "Three
Psalms for Male Chorus" and
"Three Prayers From the Ark."
Dr. Cram states that he prefers
writing for choral and vocal
purposes and "I suppose my be-
ing a singer has given direction
to this."

The men were just about to give up on G. Ralph when
after svrl attempts they managed to get the 10-foot

"I like my music to be per-
formed and hopefully enjoyed
by those who both perform and
hear it" said Dr. Cram.
Dr. M. L. Daniels head of the
music department of ACC won
the first place award for com-
position at the National School
Orchestra Association twice.
Daniels is the staff arranger for
three major publishers. The Abi-
lene Youth Orchestra will be
playing "Festique" by Daniels
at their concert May 7.
Dr. Daniels attended ACC and
North Texas State University.
Dr. Jack Boyd choral director
at ACC has had his two com-
positions "Prologue" and "The
Death of Socrates" recently per-
formed. Boyd attended ACC
North Texas State and the Uni-
versity of Iowa. He states that
"the bulk of my works are vo-
cal works either for chorus or
solo voice." i
Dr. Sumerlin is professor of
theory and composition at Mc-
Murry College. Sumerlin was
commissioned by 'the Texas
Choral Directors Association to
write a musical setting for the
famed Leigh Hunt lyric to be
used in the Interscholastic Lea-
gue sight reading contests. A
night class at McMurry in elec-
tronic music is taught by Sum-
erlin. Dr. Sumerlin's recent
"Raising of Lazarus" which pre-
miered for the Texas Music Edu-
cator's Association is called "A
Composition for Double Choir
Magnetic Tape Brass Choir and
Tympany."
The Abilene Composers Con-
cert is sponsored by the Abilene
Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Al

for women in music.
Mrs.' Ann Lindsey spokesman
for the fraternity says that the
concert is in keeping with the
purposes of the group one of
which is to promote the cause of
music both locally and national-
ly. The group presents a concert
of American music annually and
this year is selected the music of
Abilene composers.
The concert is open to the pub-
lic and there is no charge.
The composition by Daniels is
titled "Three Love Songs" and
will be sung by the men of the
ACC A Capella Chorus "directed
by Boyd.
A composition by Patterson
"Sonata No. 2 for French Horn
and Tiano" will be performed
by Lowe French horn player
accompanied by Mary Ann Tur-
ner senior from Eastland on the
piano.
"Scientist's Psalm" is the title
of the composition by Dean. It
will be sung by the Concert
Choir directed by Dr. Cram.
"Two Motets" by Cram will be
sung by the Concert Choir. The
selections are titled separately
"God of My Life Be Near" and
"A Heart to Praise My God."
Two selections by Boyd will
be sung by the women of the
ACC A Capella Chorus. The se-
lections are entitled "The Gift of
Rain" and "The Harp Song."
A second selection by Patter-
son "Sonatina ior Violin and
Piano" will be played by Pliler
violinist accompanied by Thur-
man Morrison on the piano. Mor-
rison is head of the department
of Music History and Literature.

Hamner chairman of the Stu-
dent Publications Committee.
The committee plans to meet
the following Wednesday May
3 to consider the applicants.
The positions available are
that of editor of the Brand edi-
tor of the Bronco and business
manager of student publications.
These are scholarship positions
and are usually held by juniors
or seniors.
It is emphasized that students
do not have to be journalism
majors to hold the positions.
Journalism students in certain
classes contribute stories to the
Brand but the semi-weekly pap-
er is not primarily a laboratory
product of the Journalism De-
partment Students who have had exper-
ience on high school papers and
yearbooks are urged to consider
applying for staff positions. "We
would like to encourage any
student who has a bent for jour-
nalism to try for one of the po-
sitions" said Dr. Hamner.
Several assistantships carrying
scholarships will also be open in
the fall.
Application blanks may be ob-
tained at Dr. Hamner's office
in the. English Department in
Abilene Hall or from the Jour-
nalism office in Mary Frances
Hall.

A crew of workers spent nearly 45 minutes trying to move
G. Ralph Renticulatas out of 'the Art Building and trans-
port him to the Citizens National Bank lobby. Their efforts
didn't seem to be working so (see below) They attempted
another method.
Room reservations
now being accepted
Room reservations for the fall
semester must be made by Sun-
day April 23 by applying with
the director of the hall of your
choice. Application forms are
available in all residence halls.
Students who-are graduating
getting married or otherwise
not returning to the residence
halls must complete the cancel-
lation portion of the form in
order to guarantee the return of
their room deposit.
Students currently living in a
room are given first preference
students living in the hall are
given second preference for a
vacancy in their own hall while
other on-campus students are
given third preference in se-
lecting rooms. All students are
taken on a first come basis
within the various preference
levels.
Off-campus students making
applications to move into Uni-
versity housing should do so be-
ginning Monday April 24 in the
Student Life Office. The appli-
cation must be accompanied by
a $20 room deposit.
Students desiring to live alone
may do so with an additional $40
per semester rental charge.
students who are going to en-
roll in summer school should
make a room reservation im-
mediately in the Student Life
