Foundation plans
year of activities
at weekend retreat
Student Foundation mapped the
upcoming school year during its
fall retreat last weekend which In-
cluded two days of lectures new
member orientation meetings and
discussion groups.
Forty-six students compose the
body of this year's Foundation.
Projects such as the annual
Orange Picking Trip High Jchool
Weekend Parents Day Coffee and
Parliamentary Procedure
Workshop were discussed as the
new committees convened for the
first time this year.
"We basically just plan for the
entire year" said Kenneth O'Brien
Student Foundation president. The
retreat was instrumental for the
group O'Brien said not only for
the students to become ac-
quainted with fellow members but
also in defining Student Founda-
tion and its goals for the year.
"Right off the bat I would say it
is 'Students helping students' but
I think It's more than that" said
O'Brien. "I think it's students help-
ing HSU. We've gone beyond
scholarships and into the recruit-
ment area and Founder's Day."
High School Weekend also is a
product of Foundation's exten-
sion. With a large budget of its
own and many resources at its
disposal High School Weekend
boasts an annual attendance of
over 300 prospective students.
Aside from the February weekend
Foundation members travel to and
from area high schools doing pro-
grams and speaking at churches.
With this year's projects under
way the group will start working
toward an endowment fund. The
fund according to O'Brien will
grow from interest and deposits
made at the end of the year. It will
allow Student Foundation as a
long-term goal to be able to give
larger scholarships in greater
number.
