Few voters
Turn-out shows lack of concern
Hardin-Simmons University students
were given the chance to vote for Student
Congress President on Tues. March 27.
Alex Vasquez will represent the students
next year.
Two candidates running for president
were Vasquez and Jimmy Pogue; two
fine representatives of your campus. Yet
it is appalling that only 380 students vot-
ed in the election.
During a Student Forum held during
chapel students were given the oppor-
tunity to ask the vice presidents ques-
tions about changes in policies and to
raise any issues. The replies by these ad-
ministrators were fair and honest; these
men showed geniune concern when
presented with problems.
However students continue to grip.
Barry Tyler vice president for Admission
and Financial Aid said "Students need
to be more aggressive when looking for
solutions." Most HSU students are
apathetic only digging up reasons to
grip and yet not carrying through their
true concerns.

The major election to choose the
possessor of the Student Congress
presidency the office with the loudest
voice and position with the highest
visibility for representation and the
voter turn-out was extremely low and un-
satisfactory. How many time have we heard the old
adage "If you don't vote you are voting
indirectly for the candidate who wins ?"
In our government "By the people and
for the people" democracy works only as
well as it is made to work by the
people. ...Ballots were available in Moody
Center and students were allowed to ex-
press their opinions for a voice of
representation and most students failed
to speak-up by voting.
The student who wastes his vote
through casting it in ingorance or by fail-
ing to cast it at all still stand responsible
for the outcome of the election.
This is a political season opportunities
abound for Christians to become involv-
ed in politics and it is a Christian's duty
to support the candidate that will best
represent and uphold morality.
Accept the challenge to become in-'
volved at the local level of political cam-
paigns. The country x historically has
voted the way Texans do in national elec-
tions. Never has a U.S. president been
elected without the electoral votes of
Texas.
It's up to individuals (students).
Your vote cannot be taken from you
but you could foolishly throw it away.
Don't waste it; exercise your right to vote
and get involved in campaigning.
