Road Work to Begin in Holliday
by Mike Walker-Editor
The Archer Advocate
For residents along North Ce-
dar Street, news of repairing their
street has been welcomed, but some
say they will truly be pleased when
they see a finished product.
Problems with water runoff
and dust have plagued those living
on North Cedar Street for some time.
Diana Wright and her family
moved into a house on North Cedar
Street about a year ago and have
had their yard flooded several times.
Wright said the poor drainage is the
culprit.
“The line up the road has been
blocked so all the water flows down
into my yard,” she said.
In addition to the water run-
off, Wright said crews tore into the
street a couple of months ago to re-
pair a sewer line, leaving a dirt street.
Wright said the street is either
muddy following rains or creating
dust when the area is dry.
Down the street, Donald Toal,
who has lived on North Cedar Street
for 22 years, shared the same
thoughts about conditions during
dry periods. “It’s pretty damn dusty
to say it plainly,” he said.
Toal feels the street is in such
The Bowman VFD will hold its
annual garage sale on Thursday, Fri-
day and Saturday from 7:00 a.m. un-
til 7:00 p.m. at the fire station.

disrepair because of the large num-
ber of semi trucks that use the road
each day to get to gas pumps up the
street.
“Water doesn’t drain over
here,” he said. “The water just sits
there in holes and when a truck hits
it, the road breaks.”
The City of Holliday is hop-
ing to solve these problems as it pre-
pares to rework two streets on the
north side of town.
North Cedar, along with North
Bois D’Arc Street, will soon undergo
the much needed repair, part of a
strategic plan to improve several
streets in the town.
Repair work on the streets is
expected to begin immediately and
is expected to take 60 days to com-
plete.
“The work was going to start
on Monday, but the weather held
us up,” Holliday Public Works
Director Todd Stevens said.
Stevens said on North Bois
D’Arc Street, crews will chew up the
existing road, dig down about a foot
and add lime and put a new base on
the street. The same will be done on
North Cedar, but it will also be wid-

ened to 30 feet and have curbs and
gutters installed. Stevens said both
streets will be covered with about
two inches of asphalt. Both sides
of North Cedar Street have been
staked, awaiting crews to arrive.
Freeman Construction of
Vernon was awarded the contract to
do the street work with a bid of $ 159,
246.
Stevens said North Bois
D’Arc and North Cedar were cho-
sen first because they were the
streets in the most need of repair.
He said the city of Holliday is plan-
ning to rework other streets in com-
ing years.
“The city is going to try to do
streets yearly or every other year,”
he said. “We are going to get it done
right from now on.”
Stevens said sections of North
Bois D’Arc and North Cedar will be
closed at different times during the
projects and residents need to take
notice for detours.
“We are asking people to work
with the crews and be patient with
them,” he said.
