Archer Chamber of Commerce
charter to expire in April
Since January 1st of this year, the
phone at the former Chamber of Com-
merce office has officially been an-
swered, "Archer City Visitor's Center
and Royal Theater." The reason for
this, in part, is due to the demise of the
former Chamber of Commerce orga-
nization and it's reburth as a working
committee of the Archer Community
Foundation which is going through
some changes of it's own and offi-
cially became The Royal Foundation
in name this past December.
Sounds confusing, and to those who
aren't familiar with the workings of
the two non-profit organizations, it
can be. But the hope of the board
members of the Foundation is that the
reorganization will help simplify the
lack of understanding as well as the
mission of promoting and marketing
Archer City.
In December, 2002, the board
members of the Archer Chamber of
Commerce voted to unite with the
Community Foundation due to a de-
clining membership base and suffi-
cient working capital to sustain the
office. They chose to begin opera-
tions in Jaiiuary, 2003 with a name
change to The Archer Development
Corporation and to seek a sub-fund
status with the ACF. A new member-
ship package was developed and mem-
bers hoped the changes would breath
new life into the dying organization.
Unfortunately, the plan failed to gain
new business members and funds con-
tinued to dwindle.
Gary Beesinger, who served as the
Executive Director of the Chamber &
Archer Development Corporation in
2003, and who now serves as the
office manager for the Visitor's Cen-
ter and Royal Theater said the hand-
writing was on the wall for the Cham-
ber/Development Corporation in Sep-
tember of 2003.
"It just seemed like all of our efforts
for those nine months were futile. We
only had a handful of working mem-
bers, and we couldn't get new busi-
ness members to join, and all of our
fundraising efforts just failed to bring
in additional funds to keep the Cham-
ber going."
At that last board meeting of the
Chamber in September, the remain-
ing members voted to merge with the
Archer Community Foundation and
allow the fifty-year-old state charter
for the Archer County Chamber of
Commerce to expire on April 24th of
2004. They also agreed to accept a
proposal by the Archer Community
Foundation to formally merge with
them and continue working as The
Community Development Commit-
tee of the Archer Community Foun-
dation. The Committee would ac-
complish its work under the guidance
and approval of the Foundation board
members in line with ACF's mission
statement.
"We just didn't have any choice,"
stated Beesinger. "It was either work
with the Foundation or let the Cham-
ber die a peaceful death and let the
community's businesses fend for
themselves. Since both organizations
were united in mission and purpose,
I think we made the right decision."
In October 2003, the ACF had also
made some structural changes by re-
naming the 501 (c) 3 non profit orga-
nization The Royal Foundation, and
set out to begin accomplishing it's
work through various committees in-
stead of the sub-fund groups. In addi-
tion to the new Community Develop-
ment Committee, the Royal Theater
Sub Fund become The Royal Theater
Committee and the other major com-
mittee deals with a Scholarship pro-
gram. Additional changes will be
made in the future. Abby Abernathy
serves as the Managing Director of
the Royal Foundation and current
board members include Carlton Deen-
Chairman, Dan Haile-Vice Chairman,
Lori Rutledge-Secretary and Kim
Whitsitt-Committee Liaison. Other
members are Aaron Ledyard, Judy
McLemore, Jerry Phillips, Bethann
Oswald, Mike Aulds, Ward Camp-
bell and Jeannie Hilbers,
The Foundation meets on a monthly
basis to discuss and implement plans
for marketing Archer City to tourists
which brings in money to the com-
munity and thus supports local busi-
nesses. Two major accomplishments
have been made in the last two
months. The former Mayfest Com-
munity Day and Celebration has been
reorganized into a much more intri-
cate festival, to be known as The
Lonesome Dove Summer Social. It
has been moved to the third weekend
in June and is to be held in conjunc-
tion with the Archer County Rodeo.
As reported in last week's paper, the
event will include a classic car show,
a trade's day featuring homemade
and handmade crafts and items, an art
show, live entertainment, a dance,
carnival type rides, and a baseball
tournament, as well as the annual
rodeo.
The other major accomplishment is
that the Archer City Web page, which
has been inactive for almost three
years, will be back up and running
within the next 30-45 days. Other
businesses and merchants within the
community will have the opportunity
to link off the new website at
wWw.archercitytx.com.
Beesinger also stated that in addi-
tion to serving as the office manager
for the Foundation, he does the same
job for the Royal Theater as well as
selling tickets for all Royal Theater
Productions.
"I usually get about 200 to 300
telephone calls a month." he said.
"They either want tickets to The Royal
or information about the bookstore,
restaurants, antiques, the Museum,
where to pay bills, where to find
homes to rent or purchase... every-
thing you can imagine. That's why
we now answer the phone as a
Visitor's and Information Center."
The new office for the Visitor's
Center and Royal Theater will be
located at Walsh Park and is hoped to
be finished by mid summer.
"It's going to be a great thing for
Archer City," stated Beesinger. "It
will not only be a memorial to the
Walsh Brothers, but a fine facility for
tourists and out of town visitors.
Archer City has a great future be-
cause as we all know, "There's No
Place Like Archer City!"

Comanche Moon brings home accents,
garden & feed back to East Main
Archer County native Diana Geis
built a new home a few years ago, but
couldn't find accessories to match the
rustic style that she had decorated it in.
So, with a knowledge of what she
wanted and the creativity to make these
items, she began handcrafting her own
"western" accessories. Thus, Giddy-
Up, Western Home Accents was bom.
Now Diana Geis, from her home
outside of Woodson, in Throckmorton
County, brings these unique handmade
accents back to her hometown of
Archer City, in Carlton and Sue
Deen's building that was once Stir-
rup Feed. Comanche Moon opened
two weeks ago, and in addition to
Diana's items, you can find an assort-
ment of other things, including feed.
Contributing to Comanche Moon's
inventory are: Sue and Carlton, with
books (including signed McMurtry
books), gourmet foods and coffee;
candles and lotions from Mary Beth
Simpson, custom throws and pillows
by Virginia Brown, and the jewelry
of Vicki Wright.
There are some garden items in
stock, and horse and cattle feed. More
