The Belton Independent

The Belton Independent was a weekly newspaper published in Belton, Texas that discussed local, state, and national news along with advertising. Known as a Whig newspaper, it was the first paper in Bell County; it openly opposed succession and strongly supported Sam Houston. The collection, presented by the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History, contains over 80 issues from the years 1857 to 1859.
