Cattle-Guard.

Description: Patent for a simple cattle guard for railroads "which may be applied conveniently and economically to a cattle gap, and which will prevent cattle from getting their legs caught between the sleepers above the gap, which will also prevent cattle from passing over the gap, and which will frighten the cattle from the track" (lines 16-22).

Cattle-Guard.

Cattle-Guard.

Description: Patent for a cattle-guard that improves on patents previously granted to the inventor (No. 516,307 and No. 501,785). The improvements include "the provision of a counter balance or lever with a weight slidingly thereon, which can be adjusted so as to better regulate the platform (lines 25-28) and perforated guards, which will not get as damaged by the wind as non-perforated guards. The patent also includes springs under the platform instead of springs under the sills.

Chemical Fire-Extinguisher.

Description: Patent for chemical fire extinguishers "in which the acid-bottle consists of two concentric cylinders, the inner one of which is open at top and bottom, and which, when the bottle is placed in the cylinder containing the water and soda, potash, or other material, a compressed-air seal will be formed, preventing the acid and water from commingling; but when the bottle is inverted the seal will be broken, and the water and acid coming together will generate the gas." Cotton Planter.

Description: Patent for a new and improved cotton planter. This design "consists in a cotton planter constructed with a funnel-shaped hopper, supported by a plate and frame carried by wheels, and an axle driven by a worm and worm-wheel, and held erect by a stationary tube having a flaring upper end, and carrying the furrow-opening plow. With the rotating hopper is connected a screw extending into the stationary tube, so that the seed will be fed out by the revolution of the said hopper" (lines 20-29).

Description: Patent for a new and improved cultivator and seeder. This design consists in "the combination, with the frame and plows, the hopper supported on the frame, and the oscillating agitator or stirrer in the bottom of the hopper, having a gear of the wheel-axle having an eccentric, the ring or strap embracing the eccentric and having a rod, and the rocking segment having a tubular arm receiving the rod to be oscillated thereby" (lines 73-81).

Description: Patent for a new and improved garden tile. This design "is to provide a . . . garden-tile which can be used as a plant-protector or as a curbing for walks, &c. Description: Patent for improvement in a combined seed-planter, fertilizer-distributer, and cultivator by attaching some prongs to a dropping-wheel for the purpose of taking hold of the cotton-seed and draw it out of the hopper. Pistol and Carbine Holder.

Description: Patent for a new and improved holster for pistols and carbines. This design includes a button to be attached to the desired firearm, and the button is designed to fit into a groove attached to a strap. The strap is secured around a person or horse, and a tug at the handle of the firearm causes springs in the groove to release the button, thus freeing the firearm quickly and easily.
