Description: Patent for improvement in combined plow-carrier and cotton-chopper by “combining with a plow-carrier, a revolving wheel, placed at right angles with the line of direction of the plows, and provided with a number of horizontal cutters at the ends of its spokes, for the purpose of cutting square across the ridges of earth cast up by the plows, in which cotton seed is sown, and dividing the ridges into isolated hills, each containing one or more cotton-plants.” (Lines 23-29) Illustration is included.

Improvement in Car-Brakes.

Description: Patent for "a means for the automatic application of brakes to the cars of a railway-train; and it consists in a loosely-moving draw-bar attached to the car by means of bolts passing through a central longitudinal slot, and having its sides wrought into two rack-bars, which mesh with pinions upon two windlass-shafts; which arrangement, when the locomotive is "slowed," causes the impact of the cars to drive up the draw-bars and wind up cords upon the windlass-shafts, which communicated with and apply the brakes to the wheels." Cultivator.

Description: Patent for a new and improved cultivator. This design is "first, to provide for use in such implements a sectional axle which shall be capable of being so manipulated as to cause the wheels to be placed at a greater or less distance from each other; second, to provide the necessary mechanism and suitable combinations thereof for moving the parts of the axle and the wheels into their desired positions" (lines 20-27). This enables the cultivator to adapt to different spacings of crops, marking an improvement over previous cultivators.

Description: Patent for a new and improved coupling for railroad cars. This design consists in "[t]he combination, with a coupling-pin, of the arm, rod[s], clip . . . and lever . . . [t]he combination, with a draw-bar having the extension of a lever limited by the stop-pin . . . [and] [i]n car-couplings, the coupling-link, made in two U-shaped parts, pivoted together . . . and sustained in coupling position by [a] spring or springs" (lines 96-105).

Quilting Frame.

Description: Patent for a new and improved quilting frame. This design "consists of an improved arrangement of apparatus for suspending the quilting-frame from overhead rods, on which it is made to traverse for passing the quilt along the sewing-machine to be quilted, the essential object being to contrive a simple means of shifting the frame with relation to the machine and for placing it diagonally and for turning it around from side to side, so that when the quilt is very heavy one half can be quilted, and then the quilt turned and the other half quilted on the other side" (lines 7-18).
