Car Coupling.

Description: Patent for a new and improved coupling for railroad cars. This design "consists in the construction and combination of the parts . . . the object of [the] invention being to provide a car-coupler which will automatically couple the cars to each other without the use of links or pins, and which is provided with means whereby the car can be uncoupled from the top of the car" (lines 17-25).

Car Coupling.

Description: Patent for a new and improved coupling for railroad cars. This design consists in "[a] car-coupling constructed with a draw-head having a vertically-ranging and inwardly-tapering link-socket and a horizontal hole to receive the coupling pin, in combination with a coupling-link tapering from the middle toward the end . . . [and] . . . crossing the socket, and a coupling-pin adapted to said hole and to the coupling-link, and connected to [two] lever[s] [and a] link . . . and [one of] said lever[s] extending to the side of the car" (lines 39-52).

Car-Coupling.

Description: Patent for an automatic car-coupling that is designed to be operated from either side of the car. The danger of an operator passing between cars to couple or uncouple the cars is avoided in this invention, and the coupling can be adapted to couple cars that have draw-bars to unequal height. The coupling can be manually operated if wished.

Car Coupling.

Description: Patent for a new and improved coupling for railroad cars. This design "form[s] the central opening of the draw-bar with a tup-bar having rearwardly a spiral spring. The forward end of this tup-bar is inclined forwardly somewhat at an angle at the top, so that when the said bar is pushed forward by the spiral spring at its rear end, the coupling-pin will rest upon this forwardly-projecting end of the bar, while the link will rest beneath, so that in dropping the pin will rest within the link, and not on the outer side, which would be the case if this bar were square" (lines 15-26).

Car Coupling.

Description: Patent for a new and improved coupling for railroad cars. This design "is to provide a cheap, durable, and simple car-coupling, which shall be automatic and positive in its action, and which uses the ordinary link and takes the draft in the same way as the common pin, and which will also fit any car, and will not get out of order from being battered. Description: Patent for an improved car coupling that consists of a hollow drawhead with a pivoting knuckle, a hook on one side of the knuckle, a catch on the other side of the knuckle, a latch pivoted in the drawhead that engages the catch, a spring that presses the latch against the knuckle, a rod attached to the latch, a double crank attached to the rod, hand rods and cranks on either side of the car, and a buffer above the drawbar.

Description: Patent for a new and improved coupling for railroad cars. This design "consists in a lever pivoted in the front of the top of the draw-head and provided at its outer end with an aperture, through which the coupling-pin is passed into the aperture in the draw-head, below which lever another lever is pivoted, hanging vertically across the front-opening of the draw-head, and provided at the upper part of its inner edge with a projection, so that when the coupling-link pushes the lower lever inward the upper lever and the pin are raised, and drop as soon as the link has passed into the draw-head" (lines 10-21).
