Fatigue Life of Steel Base Plate to Pole Connections for Traffic Structures

Description: "This is a final report of an extensive experimental and analytical examination of the fatigue behavior of the welded end connection used on high-mast light structures and traffic signal masts. The weld details commonly used for these connections produce very poor fatigue performance. Their performance is a function of base plate stiffness, weld type and geometry, and number of anchor bolts. Recommended connections and their corresponding fatigue strength are given as well as recommended fabrication and welding specifications."

Materials selection for concrete overlays : the final report

Description: Concrete overlays have been a rehabilitation method for many years. It has been extensively utilized and studied in other states, but Texas is still at an initial stage of fully implementing the method. The large volume of concrete highways in Texas makes bonded concrete overlays, unbonded concrete overlays, and whitetoppings very viable options. However, there is a lack of educational guidelines for pavement engineers for concrete overlay construction. This research presents the information gathered from literature review, condition survey, and evaluation of existing concrete overlays in Texas. Also, a laboratory research was performed for recommendations for materials selection and construction for concrete overlays. From these, guidelines for materials selection and construction method developed that will assist in future concrete overlays in Texas are presented.

Laboratory evaluation of influence of operational tolerance (acceptance criterion) on performance of Hot-Mix Asphalt Concrete

Description: The objective of the study was to determine the effects of variability in key mix design factors, such as asphalt content, gradation, and density, on the laboratory performance of different hot-mix asphalt samples that were mixed and compacted in the laboratory. Variability was kept within specified limits by the allowable operational tolerances, and performance was addressed through the evaluation of the results obtained from volumetric properties and laboratory tests, such as flexural fatigue test, Hamburg wheel-tracking test, and overlay tester. A series of statistical analyses was conducted to develop relationships between the key mix design factors and the observed laboratory performances of each type of mixture. From the analysis, the effects of the main variables on the results of the performance tests used in this study were found. Finally, a statistically-based sensitivity analysis was conducted to reveal the relationship between different tolerance levels and mixture performance for the individual mixtures types.

Description: "This report discussed the application of the para-transit patron accessibility analysis tool developed by the University of Texas researchers. The analysis tool is applied to four rural transit agencies in Texas. Workshops were held at these four agencies plus two other agencies. The workshops were undertaken to achieve the following three objectives: (1) Provide an overview of the demand response transit (DRT) accessibility tool developed by the research team and to demonstrate how it can be used as a proactive planning tool by the transit agencies, (2) Obtain feedback from the transit agencies on the results predicted by the DRT Tool, and (3) Identify recommendations for improving the DRT Tool."
