The Archives of the Big Bend
About the Archives
The Archives are a department within the Bryan Wildenthal Memorial Library at Sul Ross State University in Alpine. Their services include reference assistance, exhibits, reproduction of photos and print materials, and presentations. The Archives' mission focuses on documenting the history of the Trans-Pecos and Big Bend areas, with special emphasis on Brewster, Jeff Davis, and Presidio counties.
Contributions
The Archives of the Big Bend at Sul Ross State University contribute materials by W.D. Smithers, a photographer, map maker, news correspondent, author, and naturalist who came to the Big Bend area with the U.S. Army in 1915. Smithers' illustrations richly document the border activities of the military from 1916 to 1935. Details featured include the cavalry, pack mules, horses, equipment, insignias, overland routes of the troops, and the border air patrol. They have provided items to the "Rescuing Texas History, 2006" collection.
