Hicks, a former city secretary, who began the tradition in the early 1930s. The lights changed from time-to-time, but in 1945, the words Merry Xmas and the large stars on top were added.

In 1953, they advertised that they were open 24 hours a day, except for Mondays, offered curb service around the clock, and served meat that was "home killed."
