[Portrait of Joseph L. Atkins]

Description: Photograph of Joseph "Joe" L. Atkins. Atkins tried to transfer to North Texas State College in 1956, a year after Brown vs. Board of Education ruling, but was denied entry. Atkins had NAACP represent him as he sued the campus to desegregate. Atkins won but never attended North Texas State University for his undergraduate degree, because of the time it took to litigate. Atkins earned his undergraduate degree from another university, but would return to North Texas in 1967 to earn his master’s degree.
