Car Coupling.

Description: Patent for a new and improved coupling for railroad cars. This design "is to provide means for setting and supporting the pin and link of the ordinary car-coupler, so that cars will be automatically coupled when brought together; and it consists in a frame or holder for the coupling-pin and a frame or holder for the coupling-link" (lines 11-17).

Description: Patent for a new and improved coupling for railroad cars. This design "consists in a shaft journaled at its lower end in the ordinary draw-bar and at its upper end in a bracket . . . and in the combination therewith of a brace . . . adapted to support the lower end of said shaft, a hook placed between the brace and the draw-bar, and a spring surrounding the shaft and arranged to hold the shaft and hook normally . . . It also further consists in . . . the hook, . . . a spring-actuated uncoupling-rod extending through a bracket . . . and a retaining-latch. . . adapted to hold the said rod in a retracted position" (lines 22-37).

Description: Patent for a new and improved coupling for railroad cars. This design consists in "a draw-head having a longitudinal slot extending in the upper face into a groove, and formed with notches or recesses in the upper face at the side of the slot, and having a beveled upper corner and a flat face and a downwardly-extending portion at the under side, an anchor-bar pivoted at its inner end in the inner end of the slot, and having an anchor or arrow-head at its outer end formed with rearwardly-hooked flukes or barbs, and a link pivoted with its eyed rear ends upon a transverse bolt in the anchor-bar" (lines 20-32).

Car Coupling.

Description: Patent for a new and improved coupling for railroad cars. This design is "to provide a novel car-coupling pin and means for operating the same to automatically couple cars through the medium of ordinary links without the use of triggers located within the draw-head . . . The invention consists, essentially, in a vertically-movable coupling-pin adapted to rotate axially in the pin-hole of the draw-head, and having a wing or lug for supporting it in its elevated position, combined with a yielding draw-head having a vertical slot to receive the wing or lug and a shoulder to support the same" (lines 8-22).

Car Coupling.

Description: Patent for a new and improved coupling for railroad cars. This design consists in "the draw-head having the open space at its front end, the longitudinal groove in its side, extending rearward from said space, and the transverse recess at the rear end of said groove, the coupling bar resting in the groove and having a lug at its rear end" (lines 92-98). Said lug is "pivoted in the recess, and the hook at its front end arranged within the open space, and the spring having its rear end secured to the side of the draw-head in rear of the recess" (lines 1-4).

This design consists in "the link having a hooked front end, the lever, spring between the front end of the lever and the link, slide-bar pivoted to the rear end of the lever, the spring-actuated latch on the said bar, having the pin thereon to engage in a socket in the bottom of the car, and the retractile spring at the outer end of the lever" (lines 11-19).

This design consists in "the combination, with the coupling-head provided with a central tongue and a socket on each side of the tongue, and the forwardly-projecting spring-actuated hooks pivoted to the said head, with their rear ends abutting against the bottoms of the sockets and provided with beveled front edges of the coupling-socket provided with catches for the said hooks to engage with automatically, and the vertical spindle journaled in the central tongue and provided with flexible connections wound upon it" (lines 86-97).

This design consists in "[t]he combination, with the draw-head provided with the hole through its under side and the vertical guide-grooves in its exterior sides, of the stirrup sliding in said grooves and provided with a tongue at its lower and hooks at its upper parts, and a lifting-device—such as a rod or bar—adapted to engage with the upper part of the stirrup for raising it in the said external guide-grooves and causing the said tongue to raise the coupling-link in the draw-head" (lines 4-14).

Description: Patent for a new and improved coupling for railroad cars. This design consists in "[t]he combination of the draw-head provided with a flange upon one of its sides, ways for securing said draw-head in place and allowing it a longitudinal movement, an abutment which is secured to said ways upon one side, a hook which is pivoted in the draw-head on the side opposite to the flange, which hook is provided with a weight for keeping it normally closed, and which has a notch formed upon its pivotal end, and a latch which is pivoted to one side of the draw-head" (lines 64-74).

Description: Patent for a car-coupling that has a "hollow draw-head provided with a horizontal chamber, a vertical pin-hole near the forward end of said chamber, and a slot in the lower part of said draw-head opening into said chamber, of a sliding latch mounted in said chamber and provided with a lip projecting beyond the outer end of said latch and curved downward as shown, and with a groove on the lower side of said latch, of a pivoted arm engaging in said groove, and a weight integral with said arm and wholly inclosed within said slot and adapted to move said sliding latch forward beneath the lower end of the pin when the latter is raised" (lines 5-18). A coupling pin is mounted in the pin-hole.

Description: Patent for a car-coupling that has a draw-bar attached to the car, a hollow draw-head with a flaring opening that sits horizontally to the draw-bar, a spring that holds the draw-head in the horizontal position, a bar that raises and lowers the forward end of the draw-head against the spring, a coupling-pin that sits in the draw-head, a chain that connects the draw-head to the bell-crank lever, a cam that supports the chain, and a device that turns the cam in either direction in order to tighten the chain.

This design "consist[s] of a draw-head having a spring-actuated sliding piece projecting into the draw-head, with a shouldered end therein, and a hole adapted to register with the coupling-holes in the draw-head, a coupling-link having yielding slotted pieces pivoted at its ends above slots in the ends of the link, and a coupling-pin with reacting spring mounted in a frame having a winding-drum, and a rope connected with the coupling-pin, the latter projecting through and engaging the sliding piece and link" (lines 76-87).
