This was followed by the implementation itself for managing project schedules, project and portfolio resources and costs during their development cycle. This unique and challenging implementation across TxDOT encompassed all functional areas involved in the project development phase. It was successfully completed by overcoming technical, technological, and cultural challenges inherent with any implementation of this scale and magnitude."

Identification of priority rail projects for Texas: initial methodology/user manual and guidebook

Description: "This project developed a system of evaluative tools for the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to prioritize its investments in rail-related projects on a statewide basis. This work is meant to ensure that the limited available funding for rail projects is applied in the most beneficial and efficient manner and is focused upon addressing TxDOT's strategic goals. From the findings, researches recommend a transparent methodology for evaluating proposed rail projects and establishing an initial process through which rail-related investments can periodically be re-evaluated."

Description: "The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is currently designing typical highway bridge structures as simply supported using standard precast, pretension-ed girders. TxDOT is interested in developing additional economical design alternatives for longer span bridges, through the use of the continuous precast, pretension-ed concrete bridge structures that use spliced girder technology. The objectives of this portion of the study are to evaluate the current stat-of-the-art and practice relevant to continuous precast concrete girder bridges and recommend suitable continuity connections for use with typical Texas bridge girders."

Pavement repair strategies for selected distresses in FM roadways

Description: "Expansive soil is considered one of the most common causes of pavement distresses in FM roadways. Depending upon the moisture level, expansive soils will experience changes in volume due to moisture fluctuations from seasonal variations. The objective of this research was to evaluate existing repair projects on selected FM roadways. Those roadways experienced failures in the form of fatigue and rutting in the wheel path, and longitudinal (faulted) cracking including edge cracking. The causes of those failures were mainly linked to high PI expansive soil and narrow pavement."

Developing a mixture design specification for flexible base construction

Description: "In the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), flexible base producers typically generate large stockpiles of material exclusively for TxDOT projects. This large "state-only" inventory often maintained by producers, along with time requirements for testing and reduced manpower within TxDOT offices, resulted in this project's investigation into a mixture-design specification for flexible base. The goals of this project are to develop a flexible base specification that reduces TxDOT's burden for sampling and testing, reduces time and space burdens on producers for maintaining TxDOT-only stockpiles, and maintains or improves the quality of the base."

San Marcos City Park archaeological survey, Hays County, Texas

Description: "At the request of the City of San Marcos, the Center for Archaeological Studies (CAS) conducted archaeological testing of the playground in San Marcos City Park under Texas Historical Commission Antiquities Permit No. 2731. The testing was conducted on October 26 and 29, 2001, to determine whether scheduled renovation of the playground would disturb potentially intact prehistoric or historic cultural material. Shovel testing revealed possibly intact subsurface deposits below approximately 50 cm of disturbed deposits, and subsequently site 41HY319 was recorded. CAS assessed that it is unlikely that cultural resources would be impacted during construction of the playground equipment, as planned construction activities will not extend below the previously disturbed zone."

Performance of lap splices in large-scale column specimens affectedby ASR and/or DEF

Description: "This research program conducted a large experimental program, which consisted of the design, construction, curing, deterioration, and structural load testing of 16 large-scale column specimens with a critical lap splice region, and then compared and calibrated models developed in the analytical program with the experimental behavior. Specimens were carefully instrumented both internally and externally to monitor the strain behavior of the concrete and reinforcing steel from specimen construction, curing, deterioration, and final structural load testing."

Literature review of current practices in dealing with fluctuations of maintenance budgets

Description: "A literature review was conducted to investigate current budget cutting strategies used in routine roadway maintenance planning, including methods and techniques that are employed by other state and international transportation organizations (DOT's). Methods that quantify impact and increased risk factors from the reduction of routine maintenance activities were investigated. Methods developed based upon previous research were tabulated and evaluated by objective criteria such as cost savings, resource savings, and road user/stakeholder satisfaction. The researchers reviewed the data and identified the most effective risk analysis techniques, which served as the basis for the maintenance risk modeling under this project."
