Predicting damage in concrete due to expansive aggregates : modeling to enable sustainable material design

Description: "A poroelastic model is developed that can predict stress and strain distributions and, thus, ostensibly damage likelihood in concrete under freezing conditions caused by aggregates with undesirable combinations of geometry and constitutive properties.Sensitivity of the stress distributions to the aggregate and matrix constitutive parameters are assessed to allow improved concrete design."

The design of a comprehensive microsimulator of household vehicle fleet composition, utilization, and evolution

Description: "The report describes a comprehensive vehicle fleet composition, utilization, and evolution simulator that can be used to forecast household vehicle ownership and mileage by type of vehicle over time. The components of the simulator are developed in this research effort using detailed revealed and stated preference data on household vehicle fleet composition, utilization, and planned transactions collected for a large sample of households in California. Results of the model development effort show that the simulator holds promise as a tool for simulating vehicular choice processes in the context of activity-based travel microsimulation model systems."

Evaluation of corrosion resistance of improved post-tensioning materials after long-term exposure testing

Description: Ten full-scale post-tensioned beam specimens were subject to 4 years of aggressive cyclic ponded saltwater exposure. Three of those specimens were additionally exposed to saltwater spray once per month on one anchorage face. Non-destructive monitoring was conducted during the exposure period. This consisted of half-cell potential measurements, AC impedance measurements (for specimens with fully encapsulated tendons), and regular visual inspections. Chloride samples were extracted from the specimens at the end of exposure. "After 4 years, the specimens were autopsied, and all reinforcing elements from the middle of each specimen were examined for corrosion and damage. Anchorage regions were also autopsied and examined for corrosion. Duct systems included galvanized metal ducts, plastic ducts, and encapsulated duct systems. Strand types included conventional strand, hot dipped galvanized strand, copper clad strand, and stainless steel strand. Complete observations are presented."

Potential connected vehicle applications to enhance mobility, safety, and environmental security

Description: "Researchers first conducted a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art connected-vehicle research and technologies. Once researchers had a thorough understanding of the technology, they focused on selecting and developing the near-term practical applications that use connected vehicle technology. The research team then sought expert opinions from the Texas Transportation Institute working group during two brainstorming sessions, which produced two lists of potential applications and prioritized the applications based on deployment feasibility. In particular, a total of five applications were selected for development of the full concept of operations, including two in safety, two in mobility, and one in environmental security. These applications address various problems, including wrong-way driving and unprotected-grade-crossing crashes (safety): work-zone merge efficiency and safety, and freeway speed harmonization (mobility): and slippery pavement-related crashes (environmental security)."

Development of warrants for installation of dual right-turn lanes at signalized intersections

Description: "Right-turn lanes provide space for the deceleration and storage of right-turn vehicle, and separate turning vehicles from through movements. Dual right-turn lanes are increasingly used at urban intersections primarily for two reason: (1) to accommodate high right-turn demands and avoid turn-pocket overflows, and/or (2) to prevent right-turn vehicles that exit from a nearby upstream freeway off-ramp (on the left of the roadway) from abruptly changing too many lanes toward the right-turn lane at intersection."

Positive feedback : exploring current approaches in iterative travel demand model implementation

Description: This report looked at the current Texas Department of Transportation Travel Demand Model (TxDOT TDM) and found that they do not include any impedance or accessibility measures in the trip generation step and found that the best approach is to feed back the output from the traffic assignment step to the trip distribution step.

Evaluation, presentation and repair of microbial acid-produced attack of concrete

Evaluation of traffic control devices : year 3

Description: This project was established to provide a means of conducting small-scale research activities on an as-needed basis so that the results could be available within months of starting the specific research. This report summarizes the research activities that were conducted between September 2010 and August 2011. There were five primary activities and five secondary activities. The five primary activities were evaluating nighttime visibility along rural highways with bright signs, continuing the evaluation of lead-free thermoplastic pavement markings, evaluating contrast pavement marking layouts, continuing the evaluation of accelerated pavement marking test decks, and providing district support for hurricane evacuation routing. In addition, the researchers also started to evaluated criteria for setting 80 mph and 85 mph speed limits, evaluated bridge clearance signing, narrowed the focus of a rotational sign sheeting study, provided technical support for the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), and provided technical support for the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) sign sheeting specification.
