Improvement in Cotton-Planters.

Description: Patent for a cotton-planting machine which "consists in a distributing-drum, having seed-openings through it, and inclined distributing-agitators inside of it, said drum being applied to turn in a frame which is pivoted to the beam of a shovel-plow, whereby the roller will accommodate itself to inequalities of surface passed over, and uniformly discharge the seed in the drill-rows, after which a drag or coverer will cover up the seed." Description: Patent for a new and improved coupling for railroad cars. This design consists in "the combination, with the coupling-head provided with a central tongue and a socket on each side of the tongue, and the forwardly-projecting spring-actuated hooks pivoted to the said head, with their rear ends abutting against the bottoms of the sockets and provided with beveled front edges of the coupling-socket provided with catches for the said hooks to engage with automatically, and the vertical spindle journaled in the central tongue and provided with flexible connections wound upon it" (lines 86-97).

Cotton-Chopping Machine.

Description: Patent for improvement in stalk-choppers particularly adapted for chopping cotton. When the chopper is started the sprocket upon one of the traveling wheels will impart motion to the sprocket through the medium of the sprocket-chain, which will rotate the gear-wheel and in turn the pinion and the crank will impart a reciprocatory motion to the pitman and the horizontal bar, this will give the cutter-blade a reciprocatory motion. The speed of the reciprocatory chopping blade can be regulated. (Lines 45-55) Illustration is included.

Fruit-Gatherer and Pruning Implement.

Description: Patent for a combination orchard tool that gathers fruit, holds it in a bag, and can sever fruit stems in order to pick them. After severing, the fruit falls into the bag. The operator pulls a string that falls along the long handle, and the knife springs up from the bag so that it can sever the stems.

Description: Patent for an improved, inexpensive, and simple cotton press that is "adapted to compress cotton at the initial point of ginning and in a continuous operation with that of ginning, whereby [the inventor] avoid[s] the expense and labor occasioned by the handling of the cotton during its storage and transportation to the neighboring compress and the expense of said compression, and at the same time produce such compression or condensation of the cotton that I am enabled to secure the cheap rates of transportation accorded cotton which has been compressed to the standard degree of density" (lines 11-22).
