Description: Patent for a simple means for making bats for mattresses, and is an improvement on a previous patent (No. 399,041). "I gin into a room or place having the width or the length of the average width or length of a mattress, but extending the necessary length-say twenty or twenty-five feet, more or less to allow the cotton or material used to settle uniformly across it, the top at the extreme end preferably covered with wire-gauze to assist the draft from the gin. The floor and sides of this box or room or other receptacle into which the material for the mattress-bats is falling from the gin is provided with a means to carry the ginned material along from the gin as fast as it is worked. The bats may be formed in one long continuous web,from which the desired length may be cut" (lines 19-34)

Description: Patent for a new and improved means for propelling railway cars. This design "relates to motive power for railway-cars, and the purpose thereof is to provide a simple combination of parts whereby each car may be impelled by a separate motor, the entire series throughout a line or train of cars being supplied with energy from a common source, whereby the full horse-power of a steam-boiler may be applied in a manner enabling it to be utilized to the greatest possible advantage and to the utmost extent" (lines 10-20).

Means for Ventilating Cars.

Description: Patent for a new and improved ventilator. This design is "first, to ventilate cars or other vehicles in such a manner that the air-currents may be formed within and directed to any part of the car and the admission of the air regulated in quantity; second, to change the direction of the air-currents formed within the car and regulate their escape" (lines 11-17). It consists in "the body of a vehicle having its walls provided with a suitable pipe-opening, of an air-receiving pipe provided with a screen upon its outer end, a hollow fan-shaped air-distributor having an opening within said walls" (lines 58-63).

Description: Patent for a new and improved ventilator for grain, etc. This design consists in "[t]he combination, with the tubes, of the protecting end caps, consisting of a base-plate, by which it may be secured to the structure, and provided with a central opening, in which the ends of the tubes are adjusted, and a semi-cone . . . [also] [t]he combination, with the structure provided, with transverse ventilating-tubes projecting on the outside of the structure, of the . . . protecting caps" (lines 88-97).
